What are the responsibilities and job description for the PMC: Senior DevOps Engineer position at PMC?
The Senior DevOps Engineer will work as a member of our DevOps/Web Infrastructure (CloudOps) team. Some of the things the team has worked on in the last year (and is the type of work you will do) include: migrated core infrastructure to Terraform (ongoing), setup & documentation of a new local dev environment for publishing engineers, developed patterns for AWS Fargate, Lambda, and Aurora. Your work will directly impact the engineering team’s ability to deliver, and will involve owning tasks from investigation on through development and deployment.
PMC’s Product, Engineering, and Project (PEP) team is distributed, while remaining close and supportive. We believe that everyone on the team contributes and has room for growth. Some of the ways we do this include blameless postmortems, a yearly all-team summit, flexible schedules, and real work-life balance. We have a structured engineering career ladder with pay bands to help you grow, and you’ll have support and mentorship from multiple people. We are also eager to learn from you, as we recognize that everyone's individual background and experiences makes the team better.
Technology
Our cloud technology stack is centered around AWS and cloud based services. We value automated testing and consistently delivering quality.
Our DevOps toolkit includes Terraform, Jenkins, and Docker (with a heavy emphasis on orchestration and ECS/Fargate).
The teams we support use a variety of technologies including our partner network ad technology team (React, Node, and Laravel), microservices team (Kotlin and Java), subscriptions technology team (Laravel), and publishing technology team (we use managed hosting for WordPress, but manage our own dev environments).
We are looking for a DevOps engineer who will also work on some application development tasks (largely in Laravel) to allow our CloudOps team to work more autonomously.
Responsibilities
- Automating all aspects of the development pipeline from development to production to facilitate improved continuous delivery
- Some application development tasks, such as updating the applications to use different/newer tools and patterns
- Ensuring all applications utilize modern, standardized patterns and best practices
- Improving our continuous integration tools and processes to facilitate better automated testing and faster deployments
- Managing CDN and other infrastructure technologies to ensure site performance
- Managing cloud platform utilization to ensure repeatability, reliability, and cost optimization
- Managing and improving monitoring solutions and where possible, automating remediation
- As part of a team, supporting break/fix scenarios when necessary and serve in an on-call rotation
- Proactively identifying areas for improvement in existing systems and processes
- Suggesting and leading new technology infrastructure solutions for the business
Experience
You don’t need to check every box for the experience below. If you are passionate about this opportunity, we would love to hear from you.
- Experience with PHP development, particularly Laravel (WordPress is a plus)
- Experience developing and maintaining applications in other programming languages (Go, Python, etc)
- Experience using AWS and cloud services
- Experience administering and configuring Linux-based systems, including shell scripting
- Experience with system and application-level monitoring tools such as Datadog and New Relic
- Experience using Jenkins to facilitate continuous integration and other automation
- Familiarity with Git VCS and Github
- Experience with Docker to containerize applications and common orchestration platforms
- Proven ability to evaluate new technologies—is it a fad, is it reliable, is it sustainable, is it keeping momentum?
- Experience configuring and optimizing common services in a web environment
- Familiar with microservices architecture and management
- Professional programming experience in a major language (interpreted or compiled)
The Hiring Process
Your resume will be reviewed within a week of us receiving it. Every round is designed to give you an opportunity to meet members of our team and ask questions. The first round interview will be with members of the DevOps team and will cover general skills and experience, technical questions and how you like to work. There will be a second round with other members of our team, and occasionally a third round with non-engineers or other senior members of our team. There is no coding test, no brain teasers or algorithm challenges; we want to know about you and what working with you will be like.
