Position Summary:


The Philly Reading Coaches Coordinator position is a critical piece of Philly Reading Coaches (PRC), a volunteer-based OST early literacy intervention. PRC is a school-based reading program that is held during after-school hours and includes 1:1 reading sessions with K-2 grade students and a trained volunteer. The Coordinator’s main role is to lead and support a diverse group of stakeholders to implement PRC with fidelity. This entails coordinating with a diverse team which includes the Volunteer Associate and the volunteers they recruit, the Out-of-School Time (OST) K-8 Manager and their team, OST providers, Community School Coordinators, and School District of Philadelphia Principals.

Reporting directly to the OST Director of Operations, the Coordinator oversees program quality, delivery, and implementation across all sites. The Coordinator re-commits site partners, builds and leverages new site partnerships and builds transformational relationships with School site partners to support scale and sustainability. The Coordinator is a resource mobilizer, relationship-building expert, and is savvy at leading and at leveraging people, process, and policy both internally and externally. The Coordinator will work in coordination with the Director and the rest of the Elementary OST team to ensure a robust program for our young people.


Duties and Responsibilities:


The duties of the Program Coordinator include:

  • Lead an entire program toward successful implementation citywide
  • Attend and represent PRC in meetings and events
  • Create and deliver trainings as appropriate for staff and volunteers
  • In coordination with the PHMC OST and the Free Library support book selection and distribution processes
  • Collaborate with the Community School Volunteer Coordinator on community engagement and volunteer recruitment efforts
  • Establish relationships with various partners across the city to expand program offerings in diverse communities
  • Each year collaborate closely with the Director to support program growth and expansion by cultivating and stewarding transformational external relationships
  • Oversee all operational aspects of program delivery in the region
  • Collaborate with OST CQI team to implement appropriate quality assurance processes (e.g. quality site visits, feedback sessions)
  • Ensure adherence to risk management policies across the program, including program safety policies, background checks, site-specific emergency protocols, etc.
  • Planning and running recognition events/activities for staff, volunteer, students, parents, and partners.
  • Compiling and producing monthly reports
  • Other relevant duties as assigned
Skills Required:


Leadership & Management:

  • Demonstrate an exceptional ability to lead the mission-critical program function, and strategy at the regional level. Show a genuine interest in coaching, inspiring, and developing entry level staff members. Cultivate a culture of growth and development. Possess a strong ability to support and coach direct reports on management Site Coordinators and volunteers.
  • Set clear goals, delegate, and provide growth opportunities while supporting progress along the way. Recruit hire, onboard, and deliver high quality training to the program team. Provide on-site regular coaching and support to the program team.
Relationship Development & Collaboration:
  • Demonstrate a savvy ability to cultivate strong internal and external relationships. For external stakeholders, provide a best-in-class experience and demonstrate the ability to transform leads into partners. Serve as the external ambassador and face of the organization to program stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate an ability to cultivate strong internal relationships with peers, direct reports and. Set up strong operational systems within the program department. Have a strong aptitude for and commitment to effective communication remotely, in person, via email, via phone, etc.
Educational Expertise:
  • Work closely with the program team to ensure high fidelity of the model across the program. Provide guidance and support on program implementation, curriculum and assessment. Possess a high level of knowledge and competency in literacy strategies, behavior management, data analysis, and action plan creation, and, subsequently, provide coaching and training to the program team to transfer and boost educational expertise competency.

Translate larger strategic priorities into action steps and leverage a team to make measurable progress against these larger goals efficiently and effectively. Show an ability to make quick, sound, and on-the-fly decisions that consider all stakeholders. See the bigger picture and can drill down to smaller details and connect the dots.
Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Philadelphia regional educational and youth development landscape
  • Have experience with literacy assessments, teaching strategies, and student data analysis.
  • Experience in recruiting, supervision, development, and evaluation of volunteers
  • Experience in educational program development and management
  • Experience in community partnership building
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students in an educational setting preferred.
  • Bi-lingual preferred
  • Has flexibility and adaptability in work style and work schedule, including some night and weekend time.
  • Comfort navigating the City of Philadelphia as this position requires regular travel to conduct site visits, attend community events, etc.
