Job Summary:

Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center Rosemary Anderson High School (POIC RAHS) is a minority-led nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization providing the highest quality services in education, mentoring, family outreach, employment training, and placement.

Established in 1968, POIC RAHS has been a beacon for communities of color for over 50 years. Today, POIC RAHS provides education and direct services to over 700 students and work trainees annually, 80% of whom are Black or Latinx.

This position will be responsible for oversight of all accounting activities within the organization. The Controller will manage day-to-day accounting operations with primary oversight of accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, grants administration, and audit compliance.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure POIC has the proper controls and systems in place for effective program implementation, reporting to internal and external stakeholders, compliance with US GAAP, and third-party periodic and annual audits.

  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to identify, vet and implement processes, technologies, and systems to continuously improve the effectiveness and function of the Finance department.

  • Provide supervisory and technical support to all finance staff, including Senior Accountants, Accounts Receivable Specialists, Accounts Payable Specialists and Payroll Specialists.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain and oversee internal control and adherence to processes and procedures for the general ledger including balance sheet accounts, as well as receipt of revenue, and expenditures.

  • Coordinate all all audit activity, including vetting audit firms as needed, maintaining and/or delegating audit schedules as appropriate, and making recommendations for improvements to accounting procedures.

  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner. Support the Chief Financial Officer in preparing reports to leadership, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.

  • Coordinate all annual and third-party audit activities, maintaining strong relationships with auditing agencies, delegating audit schedules as appropriate, and making recommendations for improvements to accounting procedures.

  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner. Support the Chief Financial Officer in preparing reports to leadership, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.

  • Assist Chief Financial Officer in the annual budgeting and planning process. Support budget to actual variance review across programs, and review on-going financial plans with Chief Financial Officer, including process improvement as appropriate.

  • Support the Chief Financial Officer around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery as aligned with POIC’s strategic plan.

  • Ensure performance of month-end close duties on a timely basis, including preparation of journal entries, reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and preparation of financial statements.

  • Completes daily, weekly and ad-hoc management reporting as needed.

  • Records revenue in compliance with GAAP. Maintains accounting system in accordance with funder requirements.

  • Works closely with Payroll Specialist and Senior Accountant to ensure payroll allocations, direct and indirect costs, revenue, and reporting is accurate and in compliance with funder requirements.

  • Assists in process improvement projects, including streamlining of accounting, payroll and expense reporting processes and technologies.

  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with customers and coworkers, including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position provides direct supervision to all finance employees with the support of the Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate would be CPA certified with significant leadership experience, a growth mindset with a focus on process improvement and attention to detail. The position requires strong communication skills, high emotional/social intelligence, and ability to express complex ideas clearly and concisely to a wide variety of stakeholders. Technical expertise is expected in QuickBooks or other accounting software and Microsoft Office suite (with high Excel competency). Candidates who have experience with CRM and software implementation are preferred.

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance from four-year college or university; and 8 years total accounting experience and/or training. In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Experience in nonprofit and public accounting and leading financial audits required.

Certificates, Licenses and/or Registrations:

  • Active CPA license required.
