The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a Grants Associate (Foundation / Government) who will support all aspects of foundation and government grant writing within the Grants, Research and Evaluation Department. Reporting to the Manager of Institutional Giving, the Grants Associate primary responsibilities will include researching and assessing funders, drafting persuasive grant proposals, and compiling reports. Strong writing, communication, and multitasking skills required; previous nonprofit or fundraising experience preferred.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write and track assigned grant proposals, reports, and other required ancillary materials; submit all grant applications promptly.
  • Steward existing private funders, provide frequent program updates and find ways to increase/enhance their level of support.
  • Help to plan and execute funder engagement events, such as site visits.
  • Research "hot-topics" for funders, and advise Education Director and Program Managers to ensure that PAL is developing programming that is consistent with funding trends.
  • Manage aspects of government fundraising related to research and identification of grant opportunities by reading concept papers and research briefings, facilitating and cultivating new relationships, and tracking grant RFP release dates ahead of the actual release.
  • Work with PAL Evaluator in the preparation of grant reports as required.
  • Keep private partners informed of agency news, specifically as it relates to news and events related to the programs they fund.
  • Help to develop promotional materials regarding PAL programs and services.
  • Keep Raisers Edge records for renewals, prospects, and related special projects for a diverse portfolio of philanthropic partners.

Skills/Knowledge Required

    • Bachelor’s Degree required. 
    • At least 2 years of grant writing experience. Nonprofit background preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience with New York City communities and youth programs preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience with NYC DYCD, DOP, ACS, MOCJ grants, and NYS DOE, OCFS and DCJS grants a plus.
    • Knowledge of Excel, Raiser’s Edge, data management systems and Foundation Directory Online a plus. 
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work well in a deadline-driven environment.
    • Excellent time management skills to handle multiple assignments and/or projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work in a team environment.
