What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tennis Coach position at Portland Tennis & Education?
The Opportunity
As a Tennis Coach (referred to as a “Coach”) at Portland Tennis and Education (“PT&E”) and St. Johns Racquet Center (“SJRC”), you will have the opportunity to facilitate, support, and enhance the tennis education of PT&E scholar athletes and facilitate and grow the SJRC youth and adult tennis programs.
*Your Role at PT&E
- Plan and facilitate tennis instruction to students in grades K-12 as a part of our afterschool and summer nonprofit program with a mission to enable underserved youth to thrive and strengthen their community through academics, athletics, life skills, and family engagement.
- Lead fitness activities, including engaging students and volunteers to play games, participate in warm-ups, and join drills that benefit their physical and mental health.
- Participate in meetings and complete all required tracking processes necessary to uphold program’s commitment to meaningful data collection and evaluation methods.
- Ensure all supplies and equipment are maintained in good order (cleanliness and upkeep of program area after usage).
- Maintain a positive, welcoming attitude toward PT&E Staff, SJRC General Public, and PT&E’s Key Stakeholders, serving as an enthusiastic ambassador for the PT&E program and the game of tennis.
- Other duties as assigned by the Tennis Director and / or Program Director.
Your Role at SJRC
- Teach group, private, and semi-private tennis lessons.
- Promote SJRC tennis programs to the general public.
- Track existing tennis program offerings and make suggestions for adjustments as needed.
- Identify and encourage new participant involvement in SJRC programs.
- Other duties as assigned by the Tennis Director.
Job Requirements:
- Experience working with youth and adults in a tennis instructional environment.
- Experience in planning, leading and instructing group and private tennis lessons.
- Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural, academic, and economic backgrounds.
- Confidence planning and facilitating learning activities with a group of students of various ages in person.
As a successful candidate, you may have (not required):
- A Current United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) or United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) certification.
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Experience working in a nonprofit, academic, and / or youth development setting.
- Spanish language skills.
The Details
- Hours are dependent on which PT&E and SJRC programs are in session and will be coordinated in partnership with your manager (Tennis Director).
- Coach is paid hourly, bi-weekly at a pay rate commensurate with experience.
- After 30 days of successful employment, Portland Tennis & Education offers group health insurance for hourly staff who work a minimum of 20 hours/week.
