Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP)

The Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) functions as an advanced practitioner providing healthcare for a caseload of patients in the area of clinical specialization. The CRNP must demonstrate proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process, contribute to the nursing assessment and care plan and participate in the evaluation of nursing care. Examines and treats patients independently and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals following established standards and practices. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Relies on education, experience, professional training and judgment to accomplish responsibilities. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Works under minimal supervision under the direction of the collaborating physician, as appropriate. May lead and/or direct the work of others within the scope of practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Functions within the national, state, and hospital credentialing and scope of practice for the Nurse Practitioner based upon education, certification, and licensure criteria.

• Exercising diligence to aid the hospital in keeping controllable costs of medical services and supplies to a minimum, including usual and customary participation in utilization review and peer review programs.

• Utilizes supplies on PAM formulary.

• Provides patient care as set forth by the clinical practice guidelines outlined in the collaborative practice agreement, as well as evidence-based practice protocols and guidelines in providing quality care. In the event the situation falls beyond the scope of the Nurse Practitioner’s capabilities or knowledge base, the Nurse Practitioner will contact the supervisor or backup physician for further instruction.

• Has authority to see new and established patients, and initiate treatment as deemed necessary after appropriate examination of the patient and available laboratory and diagnostic results as directed by the collaborating physician within their scope of practice.

• Provides effective communication to patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team.

• Demonstrates leadership of the healthcare team through teaching and coaching to advance the plan of care or complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients.

• Coordinates the medical plan of care with the nursing plan of care.

• Secures and evaluates medical health and developmental history of the patient.

• Performs basic physical assessment using observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion. May perform and/or supervise therapeutic and/or diagnostic procedures that do not require direct physician supervision and which are within the scope of practice of the Nurse Practitioner.

• Orders appropriate laboratory and/or diagnostic studies within the scope of practice when clinically indicated.

• Prescribes medications in accordance with all current state and federal laws, rules and regulations affecting APRN practice.

• Differentiates between normal, normal variations, and abnormal deviations by specific screening tests and refers patients with abnormal findings to appropriate members of the primary healthcare team.

• Executes such diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as the physician may assign. May initiate requests to subspecialty services for consultation and/or referral.

• Provides health maintenance and anticipatory guidance.

• Executes physician’s orders in accordance with legal, ethical, and hospital standards.

• Administers medications and treatments as prescribed.

• Identifies community health resources and refers patients as necessary.

• Adheres to internal controls established for department.

• Patient and team rounding as directed.

• Records are legible and filed in a timely manner.

• Devoting professional practice time to patients of the Clinics and encouraging quality improvement, access to care, and appropriate use of the Hospital’s services.

• Reporting defective equipment at the Clinics to the hospital.

• Maintaining adequate records as required by the hospital and the Clinics.

• Providing services in accordance with professional standards and procedures, including applicable standards of The Joint Commission (“TJC”), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”), The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (“EMTALA”), any and all applicable requirements of federal, state or local laws, rules, and/or regulations, or third-party reimbursement sources covering health care services.

• Participating in a weekend on-call schedule in the event that his/her duty to make rounds for emergency hyperbaric and wound care situations.

• Provide case management for patients.

• Provide specific assessments according to protocols and procedures, clinical competence in procedural skills, treatments, and patient/caregiver education related to wound care management.

• Act as a patient advocate in delivery and coordination of patient care.

• Provide efficient and effective care with the guidance of the physician during clinic sessions.

• Managing multiple patients at the same time with high energy and organization.

• Collaboration / Communication / Follow-up

• Collaborating with other health care Providers, wound care center Physicians, Program Director and Medical Director, regarding hospitals and patient needs.

• Effectively communicating with others, both verbally and written.

• Monitoring the cases of patients for whom the CRNP is responsible.

• Completes other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training: Master’s degree with Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification from an accredited program. Current Active Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in the state where hospital resides. Current ACLS and Healthcare Provider/BLS certifications required. Current national certification with an accredited testing organization.

Other Qualifications: Strong communication skills, exceptional time management skills, good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point), customer service oriented with a focus on patient satisfaction

Experience: Minimum 3 years of acute experience preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of methods and procedures in the field of general medicine.

• Knowledge of principles of the development, implementation and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.

• Skill in the care and treatment of patients.

• Skill in the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment.

• Ability to plan, assign and/or supervise the work of others.

• Ability to examine, assess and treat.

• Ability to prepare and supervise preparation of case histories and medical records of patients.

• Understanding of the role of medical ethics in the practice of nursing and the inter-relationship of the law.

• Ability to assume leadership roles, including serving as leader of a multi-disciplinary treatment team.

• Ability to code and bill for services provided and documented and interpret reports.
