POSITION DESCRIPTION: Teaching Assistant, K-8 

 

 

Category: Teaching Staff 

 

Status: Part-time; Nonexempt 


Pay Rate: $14.00 per hour 

 

Potential Travel: Children's Community School in Waterbury, CT 06702

 

Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of standing and walking, including the need to ascend and descend staircases; Frequent need to kneel, stoop, and sit at floor level; Frequent periods of sitting at a desk, table, or other work surfaces; Frequent periods of extended exposure to computer screens/monitors; Frequent use of typing keyboard and manual writing; Infrequent need to lift, carry, pull, or push items weighing up to 25 pounds 

 

Working Environment: School setting, with the presence of children and adults; Classroom environment, including educational furniture and technology; In-classroom office environment, including desk and standard office furniture and technology; Natural & fluorescent light; Heating & air conditioning; Onsite and off-site outdoor settings for recess, field trips, and special events 

 

Typical Schedule: Daily shifts of 4.5-6 hours during School operational hours of 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; Academic year (per contract) 

 

Supervisor: Principal

Overview 

The Teaching Assistant, K-8 is responsible for providing direct assistance to the Teacher, K-8 in the successful planning, delivery, and assessment of academic instruction at assigned grade levels and content areas in order to ensure the successful fulfillment of the institutional mission.  The Teaching 

Assistant, K-8 is also responsible for assisting in the safe, effective management of all students in assigned classrooms and all-school events and activities, utilizing appropriate methods of behavior management in accordance with established school policies and procedures.  The Teaching Assistant, K-8 will perform various duties related to the preparation of academic materials, tracking and data entry of operational statistics, and other tasks as assigned by the Principal and/or Executive Director. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities 

Mission Awareness 

  • Effectively communicate the mission and goals of the school to internal and external constituencies, ensuring mission alignment for all school activities 
  • Cultivate an atmosphere of community and compassion amongst faculty, staff, students, and families 

 

Academic Life 

  • Assist the Teacher, K-8 in various clerical, instructional, and managerial tasks directly related to grade level, classroom, and institutional goals 
  • Provide assistance in preparing curricular materials and physical classroom spaces, maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment 
  • Guide and assist individual and small groups of students in academic tasks, under the direct supervision of the Teacher, K-8 
  • Direct all parent/guardian requests and communication to the Teacher, K-8, providing insight as needed 

 

Student Life 

  • Play an active role in creating and maintaining a positive social and emotional learning environment that allows for the safe and orderly operation of the classroom and all school spaces and activities 
  • Assist in the enforcement of behavioral expectations, in accordance with School policies, that highlight mutual respect, cultural competency, and a commitment to rigorous learning 
  • Intervene, as appropriate, to address any student violations of School rules or behavioral expectations, reporting such incidents to the Principal, according to School policy 
  • Supervise student participation in recess and meal activities, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct 

 

Professional Learning Community 

  • Participate actively in relevant professional development activities 
  • Maintain positive, professional, and collaborative relationships with all colleagues 
  • Contribute to the overall success of the School through engagement in additional responsibilities intended to foster community and strengthen the mission of the institution 

  

Administrative 

  • Assist in tracking and entering data pertaining to attendance, meal counts, and other operational details, as needed 

 

Other 

  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Principal or Executive Director 

 

Required Skills & Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or higher preferred 
  • At least 3 years of consistent work experience 
  • Direct experience working with school-aged children
