Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct or assist in treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Perform initial basic assessment procedures including standardized psychological testing, clinical interviewing, mental status examinations, substance abuse evaluations, and psychological and nursing assessment.
- Identify mental health and nursing diagnoses and provide patient education.
- Observe, monitor, record, and report patient's progress.
- Conduct or assist in conducting group and individual counseling, therapeutic community, and other related milieu activities.
- Institute precautionary measures to prevent patient injury or suicide.
- Assist patients with nutritional, hygiene, and comfort measures.
- Obtain and record vital signs.
- Coordinate with other agencies regarding specified care, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and
- administrative functions. Contact military and community agencies to obtain collateral information.
- Explain and interpret mental health services to patients or others.
- Assist in, or arrange patient referral to public, private, and military community agencies.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports pertaining to specialty services.
- Assist with care of individuals experiencing acute and post-traumatic stress reactions.
- Prepare and maintain treatment records.
- Provide care for eligible patients resulting from the deployment related screenings in accordance with the Deployment Health Clinical Center (DHCC) guidelines located at http://www.pdhealth.mil/. Emphasis will be on the treatment of mental health to include post-traumatic stress disorders and other combat related psychological symptoms.
- Family member care, related to deployment, may be included in the active-duty member’s scheduled sessions.
- Measure and record patient's general physical condition, such as pulse, temperature, and respiration, to provide daily information; observe patients to detect behavior patterns and report observations to medical staff.
- Intervene to restrain violent, potentially violent, or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means as required.
- Co-facilitate prescribed individual or group therapy sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures.
- TRIAGE & SCREENING: Psychiatric Technicians can screen patients for appropriateness, eligibility, level of care, and treatment program admission using a variety of skills such as evaluating psychological, social, and physiological signs/symptoms, identifying co-existing conditions, determining urgency and severity of presentation/symptoms, and eligibility for services. Psychiatric Technicians perform triage services, which commonly involve brief same-day appointments focused on the presenting problem, a safety assessment, and dispositioning.
- REINFORCING CLINICAL OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric Technicians actively monitor patients' progress and compliance, reinforce treatment gains, and solidify clinical objectives through close collaboration with the supervising provider. BHTs effectively monitor compliance with homework assignments. They target patient motivation and treatment engagement using motivational interviewing techniques.
- DISASTER OR TRAUMATIC EVENT RESPONSE: Psychiatric Technicians participate in disaster or traumatic event response, which may involve providing psychological first aid or other appropriate crisis interventions, consultation with command, and other non-therapeutic outreach activities designed to mitigate the negative impact of exposure to trauma and increase adaptive behaviors.
- ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Psychiatric Technicians preform duties, such as documentation of clinical encounters, and review of patient medical records to facilitate continuity of care.
- Psychiatric Technicians participate in clinical supervision with an independently privileged behavioral health provider, consisting of a minimum of one hour of clinical supervision per week including scheduled/unscheduled supervision sessions.
- Routine staffing of cases counts toward the supervision requirement, provided staffing incorporates case discussion, feedback, and a didactic/skill-building component.
- Psychiatric Technicians are responsible for conducting inspections of the clinic spaces, correcting discrepancies found and reporting as necessary. Psychiatric Technicians must effectively utilize the chain of command to communicate and/or resolve any problems occurring in the clinic that may impact upon the quality of patient care.
- Psychiatric Technicians comply with training in the standard competency skill areas. Qualifying didactics include conferences, formal trainings, workshops, clinically focused continuing education trainings and activities, and any DHA-provided trainings. Didactic training also may be delivered by clinical supervisors, officers overseeing Psychiatric Technicians.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program; or completion of an equivalent education and experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians or completion of education and experience as a behavioral science specialist/technician in the United States military and proof of having completed an Armed Forces course involving psychiatric technician training or civilian course from an accredited school in the care of behavioral health patients.
- Must have national certificate as a behavioral or psychiatric technician, or completion of equivalent education and experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians.
- Possess at least 1-year full time experience within the preceding 2 years as either a Psychiatric Technician or Mental Health Technician, or an LPN with at least 1-year full time experience within the preceding 3 years in a partial, acute, or long term (residential) psychiatric facility.
- Must be a US Citizen.
