Animal Care Specialist

Job description

****Looking for reliable people to work our morning shift 8am-12pm & our night shift 4pm-8pm********

Essential Functions:

• Follow established disease control protocols to clean and sanitize all cages, kennels, and related areas
• Provide appropriate quantity and quality of food and water to shelter animals
• Monitor animals and immediately report health, behavior, appetite or temperament issues to the shelter manager.

• Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate handling and placement of animals in the shelter environment
• Assist Shelter Manager with administration of topical/oral medicine
• Light grooming/bathing
• General housekeeping duties: cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, mopping floors, etc
• Exercise/socialize animals a minimum of three times per shift
• Transport animals to vet appointment, c-snip, grooming, adoption events, etc

• Must maintain proper appearance and personal conduct at all times
• Work cooperatively with all staff, supervisors, and volunteers
• Must be patient, courteous, and work well under stressful situations
• Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly and professionally to change

Physical Demands:

• Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking and standing for 4-8 hours a day
• May require lifting and carrying animals/materials up to 40lbs
• May be required to use strength and agility in capturing or restraining stronger, active animals
• Exposure to various weather conditions. Employees work outside all year.
• Regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste and moderate noise levels

Additional Requirements:

• Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Attend and participate in all staff meetings
• Report to work/start duties at assigned start time
• This position is in a fast paced, multi-faceted environment that requires the ability to multi-task and respond quickly.
