Job Description

This position serves as a Communications Representative for the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), working with LEO leadership to ensure effective communication. This position serves as the recognized resource for social media accounts and other digital platforms, including our mass email account to create marketing emails and our content management system to create and post website content.

This position utilizes social media, web platforms, and other state resources to ensure broad awareness of department programs and initiatives. In this role, the incumbent will continually research and recommend digital best-practices to ensure the Department is utilizing recommended resources and efforts to best reach our audiences. In addition, the position will work with communication team members on posting photos, graphics, videos, newsletters and other media forms to effectively relay the Department’s mission.

This position also serves as the department’s liaison for the statewide social governance council, providing key guidance and oversight for critical social policy and implementation requirements as overseen by DTMB.

This position will advise on general strategy, write press releases, develop PowerPoint presentations and other marketing and outreach collateral, and work on special projects at the discretion of the LEO Communications Director.

There is a possibility of a remote/hybrid schedule based on performance and operational need. However, all work must be performed in Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position.


Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, communication arts, public relations or a related field.

Two years of professional experience in preparing and disseminating informational and promotional materials equivalent to a Communications Representative, including one year equivalent to a Communications Representative 10.

Communications Representative 12
Three years of professional experience in preparing and disseminating informational and promotional materials equivalent to a Communications Representative, including one year equivalent to a Communications Representative P11.

Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major with two years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.
OR
Completion of 60 semester (90 term) credits including 16 semester (24 term) credits in any combination of coursework in the following areas: English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, communication arts, marketing, or public relations, AND two years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.
OR
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of experience equivalent to a Communications Representative may be substituted for the education requirement.

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
