Job Responsibilities
- Responsibilities of the Public Health Unit (60%)
- Provides appropriate prevention and control of communicable diseases through education and intervention using epidemiological principles
- Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates immunization clinics
- Participates in ongoing community assessment program planning and implementation
- Participates in emergency preparedness planning, response, and recovery
- Provides general health nursing assessments and care for individuals and families through home, office or telephone visit or school visits
- Coordinates assigned grant activities
- Evaluates, collaborates on environmental health and human hazard situations
- Provides health related information and referral services one-on-one as well as in a group setting
- May assist/train new workers
- Collaborates in the development of and contributes to individual, team, and Departmental quality improvement and evaluation
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Documentation (30%
- Document all client and collateral contacts as well as all necessary forms in accordance with grant and program regulations, professional standards, and agency policy.
- Complete daily time studies in accordance with the agency policy.

- Fiscal & Administration (5%)
- Attend Unit meetings and department All Staff meetings.
- Maintain knowledge of procedural, administrative, and program updates and changes.
- Attend required or supervisor recommended training.

- During a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties or perform emergency response roles
- Represent the Department by serving on committees, workgroups, etc., as assigned
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the theory, techniques, practices, and standards of professional nursing
- Knowledge of, and adherence to agency programs, procedures, regulations, policies, and applicable statutes/laws
- Knowledge of public health programs including nursing, environmental health, and communicable disease
- Ability to work independently in meeting a variety of public health regulations and requirements
- Ability to accurately maintain records and prepare reports in a timely manner
- Ability to utilize appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, lifestyles, and physical abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, community groups, school personnel, and state and regional public health agencies
- Ability to use standard office machinery, equipment, personal computers, and related software
- Ability to prioritize projects and time and work within timelines and resources available
- Ability to work effectively with limited supervision or assistance
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule based on client need
- Ability to work under stressful conditions with exposure to unstable and dysfunctional family dynamics
- Skill in administration of immunizations and the use of various health related screening equipment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to make skillful, coordinated movements of one or two hands (manual dexterity).
- Ability to make skillful, coordinated movements of fingers of one or two hands (finger dexterity).
- Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds (e.g. a small child); frequently lift 15-20 pounds (equipment and supplies to locations where services are delivered
- Ability to frequently bend/crouch/stoop to perform health assessments, filing, etc.
- Ability to perform work from a sedentary position.
- Ability to function in situations encountered in normal office setting.
- Ability to function in situations encountered in client’s home setting which may be poorly maintained and where rodents, animals, and various kinds of filth may be present
- Ability to move about the community under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, uneven terrain, multi-level buildings that may not be handicap accessible.
- Ability to drive a vehicle
Additional Information
The selection process for this position may include an employment history evaluation, a personal interview, pre-employment physical, including drug screening, and a Department of Justice Caregiver Background check as defined under Wisconsin Administrative Code HFS 12.
- Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a nursing program approved by the board of nursing or accredited by the national professional nursing education accrediting organization.The program shall include preparation in public health nursing or community nursing.
- Experience performing nursing duties related to the position, 3 year minimum preferred
- Current license as a registered nurse under CH 441, Stats at the time of hire and throughout employment.
- The ability to work a flexible schedule and perform after-hours services when needed or scheduled
- Possess a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle for business use, insured to county-required limits
- Provision of current immunization record
