What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tutor position at Primavera Online High School?
Tutors provide individual and small group tutoring in an online setting. The tutor facilitates learning as a guide and must be able to coach and assist the student in a positive way to become a successful, independent learner. The purpose of tutoring is to increase and enhance mastery of concepts in their courses of study. Tutors integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Assist students in specific course material and/or skill areas; integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
- Provide helpful and encouraging feedback on progress in key concepts.
- Follow scheduling protocol and meet with students per predetermined time or as students sign-up for live support.
- Work directly with the site director, 6-12 principal, and content community lead teacher to support identified students.
- Review up to date class topics and understand the subject matter prior to tutoring session.
- Document tutoring session per documentation protocols and provide insight to students, parents, and content learning community.
- Determine skills that need additional assistance and provide feedback to the community lead teacher as well as the instructional lead teacher per identified protocols.
- Meet regularly with supervisor to review progress and incorporate feedback into tutoring practices.
- Participate in the required tutor training.
- Assist in state testing duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills/Abilities: A tutor must demonstrate the ability to:
- Quickly establish rapport and communicate well with a diverse student body.
- Technology Savvy-able to troubleshoot basic technological issues.
- Excellent customer service.
- Maintain patience providing support and guide students toward success.
- Demonstrate competency in subjects they are going to tutor (i.e. earn a 3.0 GPA or better in the skill area, teaching or tutoring experience, etc.).
- Exceptional time management to effectively help students.
- Collect and analyze student data to inform tutoring and professional development needs.
- Ability to “meet students at their level” and explain concepts step by step.
Education/Training:
The ideal candidate would be a college student, subject matter major, with 3.0 or higher GPA, seeking part time (2o hours) employment. In addition:
- Available to work on-site, in-office, between the hours of 8 AM and 8PM per 20 hour workweek schedule.
- Upon hire, pass the AZ background check and receive fingerprint clearance card paid for by StrongMind.
- Master of concepts from one or more of the content areas outlined below:
- High school math: Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.
- High school English: English 9, 10, 11, or 12.
- High school science: Integrated Science, Biology, or Chemistry
- Special education
- Teaching or tutoring experience is a plus.
