Overview

PPPL invites applications for the position of Health Physics (HP) Manager in support of the Lab Mission. This position reports to the Head of Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H).

 

This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the PPPL Health Physics Program, including the internal and external dosimetry programs, ALARA program, health physics instrumentation program, Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMC&A) program, radiological environmental monitoring program, PEARL and HP CASL operations, radiological emergency preparedness (EP) program, accelerator safety, and field operations in support of PPPL and the Health Physics Division of the ES&H Department.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

 

The Health Physics Manager: 

  • Manages the following areas of responsibility: Internal and external dosimetry and ALARA, NMC&A program, HP instrumentation, radiological environmental monitoring, Princeton Environmental and Radiological Laboratory (PEARL), emergency preparedness, HP instrumentation Calibration and Servicing Lab (CASL), HP field operations, and associated training.
  • In areas of responsibility, interprets and assesses regulatory and operational requirements, establishes policy, conducts technical analyses, specifies procedural and/or programmatic requirements, ensures that resulting policies, procedures or programs are developed and implemented.
  • Supervises subordinates in the accomplishment of tasks in areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures the development of subordinate staff's technical and professional skills.
  • Instructs and acts as a subject matter expert in areas of responsibility in support of the PPPL training program.
  • As a group leader, ensures that subordinates follow established ES&H rules, properly use prescribed safety equipment, carefully follow procedures, and report ES&H deficiencies. Reviews planned work to assure no negative ES&H impact and encourages employees to be safety conscious. Ensures that subordinates receive appropriate ES&H training and are aware of their responsibilities. Ensures the workplace complies with applicable ES&H Directives, DOE Orders (including Accelerator Safety), OSHA standards, and applicable State and Federal Regulations.
  • Provides innovative ideas and solutions to radiological issues to advance the Laboratory’s research mission.
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics or related discipline, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the field of Health Physics with at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Highly desirable – experience in neutronics and shielding.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills with an inclusive approach to decision making.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a broad range of work activities and technical disciplines involving a diverse spectrum of professional and non-professional personnel.

  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Excellent Computer skills (PC/Mac).

  • Proficient knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite including Word, PowerPoint, Excel using advanced excel functions.

  • Proficient with the Google Suite including Google Slides, Google Docs/Google Sheets.
  • Certificates and Licenses: 

    • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) desired.
    • MS in Health Physics or related field desired.

    Physical Requirements: 

    • No unique physical requirements – job responsibilities include office work, field walk-throughs to monitor and direct work.

    Working Conditions: 

    • This position will be a hybrid mix of in office and onsite presence.
