Overview

The Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) is Princeton University’s primary center for international and regional studies. It fosters academic analysis and public engagement around global challenges and regional dynamics. Through 2 multidisciplinary centers (Contemporary China and Global India), 5 undergraduate minor/certificate programs, and an array of programs for faculty, students, and visitors, PIIRS supports cutting-edge research, innovative teaching, collaborative learning, visiting fellows, international networks, and dynamic programming.

 

The Executive Director (ED) of PIIRS supports the faculty Director by executing policy and strategic direction for the Institute, particularly in the areas of short- and long-term planning, international initiatives, personnel, operations, and finance. The ED is the Director of the PIIRS Global Seminars, 7–9 credit-bearing summer international courses taught by Princeton faculty abroad. The ED represents PIIRS within the University by building effective relationships with campus partners, particularly in the area of internationalization, and outside the University by helping to manage PIIRS’ relationship with external advisors and partners, potential donors, partnering institutions, and other stakeholders.

 

The Director establishes the academic and intellectual direction of the institute, and the ED provides support for the Director’s vision. The ED supervises an administrative staff of 19 and oversees budget management; academic programs and student services; facilities and operations; staff supervision and performance management; and policy and compliance. The ED reports directly to the Director, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Manager of Academic Administration. An advanced degree is preferred for this position, but candidates with a bachelor's degree and equivalent, strong administrative experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

International Curriculum• The ED oversees the administration of annual Global Seminars, 7-9 credit-bearing summer international courses taught by Princeton faculty abroad. The ED works with 6 PIIRS staff and various University offices and personnel on all aspects of the seminars, including course development, faculty and other University personnel recruitment, contracts with host institutions and international personnel, appointments of both the Princeton and international faculty, seminar budgets (with the PIIRS Finance Manager), student preparation and disciplinary issues, and safety and security. To date, PIIRS has offered 70 distinct seminars in 25 countries and enrolled more than 1,200 undergraduates. • The ED participates with various University offices (e.g., Office of International Programs, the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Operations, the Dean of the Faculty) to develop policy on international study abroad. • The ED may travel to a selection of Global Seminars annually and be called upon to assist with emergencies abroad.

 

Personnel Administration• The ED supervises the hiring, performance reviews, merit increase process, and terminations of the PIIRS administrative staff including regular staff (19, currently), short-term professional employees, casual hourly employees, and student employees. • The ED oversees the appointments and salary reviews of PIIRS language instructors and associate research scholars, in consultation with the PIIRS Director and associated faculty, as well as the appointments of annual international scholars. • The ED manages the appointment of University and international personnel associated with the Global Seminars.• The ED should be knowledgeable in University policies and familiar with international hiring practices.

 

Budget and Financial ManagementThe ED works with the PIIRS Director, the Deputy Director, and the Finance Manager on most aspects of the Institute finances. • The ED consults with the Finance Manager on the overall PIIRS budget to determine allocations, monitor expenditures, and liaise with PIIRS personnel on a variety of financial concerns.• The ED oversees the development and management of the annual Global Seminars budgets and ensures compliance by PIIRS staff, seminar faculty, and associated personnel with established University policies for international transactions.

 

ProgrammingThe ED consults regularly with PIIRS managers and PIIRS program directors on the day-to-day operations of the 2 PIIRS centers, the 5 minor/certificate programs, and research programming, which otherwise operate independently. The ED may be called upon to assist directly with these operations.

 

Other• Communications: The ED oversees the production of the Institute’s annual report and may participate in the development of the PIIRS website. The ED consults with the PIIRS communications staff on the overall communications strategy for the Institute.• Campus Outreach: The ED may participate in campus initiatives and serve on committees, particularly as they relate to international activities.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

- Master's or professional degree.

- 7 or more years of professional experience.

- Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and communications skills. - Ability to effectively manage the resources of the department: experience in budget management, oversight of financial operations. - Experience in developing and managing international programming for undergraduates.- Supervisory experience and ability to coach and mentor staff.- Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities. - Strong interpersonal skills and work cooperatively with a wide variety of campus offices. - Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of faculty, staff, and students, and other members of the University community. - Knowledge of University policies, especially involving international operations and study abroad.

 

Preferred Qualifications

- An advanced degree is preferred for this position, but candidates with a bachelor's degree and equivalent, and strong administrative experience may be considered.- Experience in university administration strongly preferred- Knowledge and experience in conflict management and resolution - Project management experience
