Job Overview
The Microbiologist is responsible for carrying out routine microbiological testing to support the manufacturing facility. The person in this role will focus on routine microbiology activities such as utility and facility environmental monitoring, data reporting, activity scheduling and routine problem solving.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • The Microbiologist position should exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions;
  • Ensure compliance with established regulations and customer requirements, including GMPs as listed in 21 CFR 111 and 117, and Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) scheme;
  • Apply ascetic/microbiological techniques in daily workload, prepares and analyzes samples for indicator organisms and pathogens according to methods;
  • Perform sampling and testing for our EMP program;
  • Participates in scheduled lab cleaning and maintenance to maintain a clean environment;
  • Collect and analyze microbiological data, and provide summaries to QC Lab Management;
  • Ordering/stocking of supplies;
  • Provides input towards developing solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity;
  • Read test results and notify QC Lab Management of results that are out of specification;
  • Write, maintain, and update microbiology SOP’s;
  • Assist in quality control duties by taking incubator temperatures, inoculating control organisms, running media controls etc., and other laboratory quality control procedures including quality control documentation;
  • Assist with training and research assignments;
  • Maintain safe, efficient, and compliant lab operations;
  • Reporting and evaluating results and data entry using Labware (LIMS);
  • AOAC proficiency testing participation;
  • Completion of required training as needed;
  • Follow cGMP guidelines and processes as established in department SOPs;
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary.
Requirements and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent from four year college or university in a scientific discipline with 1-3 years related experience or Associates degree or equivalent from 2 year college or university with 2-4 years related experience in a food environment. Nutraceutical experience preferred;
  • Ability to work with potential pathogens including Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus;
  • Ability to apply technical principles, theories, and concepts ;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of current laboratory and clean-room procedures, policies, and standards;
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skill;
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret regulatory information, industry standards, and International and Federal Food Regulations;
  • Thorough understanding of unit conversions, nutritional analysis calculations;
  • The ability to make educated judgments on correctness, accuracy, and appropriateness of information;
  • Good organizational skills and great attention to detail;
  • Detail oriented and highly organized;
  • Working knowledge of LIMS, Microsoft office and general computer concepts;
  • Intermediate math, communication, and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to follow company processes and procedures;
  • Ability to work without direct supervision.
Work Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended hours;
  • Work environment is normally in a laboratory setting. Must be able to make occasional rounds in a warehouse and production environment;
  • Ability to view a computer screen and type for extended hours;
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment;
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.;
  • Ability to wear any required PPE;
  • Ability to work around a variation of different smells and aromas;
  • Other physical requirements include occasional squatting, bending, twisting, and bilateral hand and wrist movement;
  • Ability to adjust work schedule as business needs require.
