POSITION SUMMARY
In conjunction with the Director of Laboratory services and Medical Director, is responsible for organizing, planning, coordinating, and directing activities of the assigned laboratory. Works closely with physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Ensures the efficient use of labor resources, money, and equipment to meet the goals of the health care system. Prioritizes equipment and supply needs for the laboratory and works closely with Laboratory Director in finalizing budgets. Prepares and is responsible for managing expense budget performance, demand and service mix, staffing, productivity, and resource allocation for the lab to meet organizational targets. - Interviews, hires, assigns work duties, and completes annual performance evaluations timely. Administers discipline when necessary and recommends discharge when appropriate. Takes ownership of employee satisfaction data; ensures effective staff communication using staff meetings, daily huddles and rounding; ensures availability to discuss concerns with staff and communicates effectively.
- Ensures ongoing educational programs and training opportunities for all staff, including mandatory classes and orientation for new employees.
- Demonstrates a commitment to managerial development through participation at hospital meetings and committee participation. Functions as change agent- responsible for local implementation, communication, and education of system wide efforts. Escalates local concerns appropriately.
- Oversees and directs the daily workflow. Ensures consistent staff schedules to meet service needs within worked hours targets. Establishes priorities and monitors workflow. Analyzes for limiting factors, recommends, and implements improvements, as approved and funded. Plans and prioritizes projects and enhancements with the Laboratory administrative team to improve the operation.
- Directly responsible for maintaining the laboratory in good standing with all licensing and accrediting agencies including: CAP, TJC, and CLIA. Directs and coordinates the quality assessment program for the assigned Laboratory and is accountable for data. Ensures the assigned laboratory follows standard operating procedures for each specialty and sub-specialty, including pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic functions. (Accreditation)
- Ensures laboratory complies with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Provides training for departmental safety compliance.
- Ensures efficient, high quality service is provided to meet agreed upon service levels, following established operational parameters. Investigates service failures, acts as L1 for RL6 events, thoroughly investigating all reported issues in the required timeframe and is responsible for corrective actions, when indicated.
- Takes ownership of patient satisfaction data; participates on local teams and committees as needed to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction. (Patient satisfaction)
- Remains aware of technology, trends, and the regulatory environment; maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory service.
Skills: Must be able to differentiate colors.
Years of Experience: Minimum of five years laboratory experience with progressive leadership responsibility.
Certification: Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Physical Demands: Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens, odorous
chemicals, carcinogens mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards and
flammable liquids.
Must be able to occasionally move, lift and/or carry lightweight materials and
equipment weighing up to 50 pounds up to 5% of the time.
