The Electrophysiology Registered Nurse functions independently as a member of the Heart & Vascular Care Procedure Center patient care team that includes registered nurses, Electrophysiology Cardiovascular Technologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, cardiology fellows and faculty physicians. This individual is responsible for helping to develop and implement systems to assure the smooth and efficient flow of patients for procedures in the Electrophysiology (EP) Lab. Duties include but are not limited to the patient assessment, administration of medications, moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring, circulating and scrubbing during EP procedures and other procedures scheduled in our invasive procedure labs. This position also assists in pre and post patient assessment and patient care, patient and family teaching, circulating, scrubbing, and hemodynamic monitoring during the invasive procedures. This individual is able to demonstrate clinical expertise in working with electrophysiology patients during invasive diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology, and device implantation procedures. This position requires the individual to be flexible in their work schedule. This individual has previous critical care experience with an emphasis on cardiology and is ACLS certified. Previous moderate sedation experience, ability to self direct, and the ability to organize varied workload are required. This incumbent demonstrates competency in the delivery of patient care from adolescent thru geriatric patient population. This position reports directly to the Invasive Cardiology Supervisor. who jointly evaluates performance with input from the Invasive Cardiology Manager and Medical Director of the EP Lab. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent performs the following job responsibilities: • Under limited supervision provides patient care within a broad range of health care needs in Cardiac Special Procedures. To include, but not limited to: Electrophysiology diagnostic and interventional procedures, Implantable Cardiac Devices, Loop recorder implant, and cardioversion procedures. • Systematically and continuously collects, assesses and documents data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic care for the patient and family. Documentation of patient assessment and medical care will require basic computer skills to complete electronic medical record. • Assists the physician in the performance of pediatric and adult Cardiac Special Procedure tests; invasive diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures. • The Registered Nurse establishes an in-depth database by assessing the psychosocial and physical status of patients presenting for these procedures. • Documents and obtains accurate patient information for national registries including but not limited to ACC/NCDR ICD registries. • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge and skill of the moderate sedation process. • Performs an in-depth cardiovascular and sedation assessment in accordance with current UWH policies. Is able to maintain consistent level of moderate sedation in conjunction with procedure performed and individual patient’s clinical state. Initiates additional patient comfort measures/alternatives for sedation, as appropriate. • Assures that informed consent has been obtained on the patient and that all questions and concerns have been answered to the patient's satisfaction. • Assists in the checking of daily quality controls for a wide range of equipment utilized in the routine care of a patient presenting to the Heart & Vascular Care Procedure Center. • Develops/integrates standards of care for patients presenting to the lab. • Implements safe, competent and efficient care to patients within UWH and departmental policies, procedures and standards across a variety of populations and complexity of situations. • Foresees potential problems, adapts priorities and plans independently without outside direction. • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiovascular medications, pressors and anti-arrhythmic agents including dosing, side effects, and drug interactions. Able to identify and manage adverse events or unanticipated outcomes using critical thinking skills. • Demonstrates technical skills, trouble shooting skills, and expert knowledge of catheters and equipment used during EP and Cardiovascular procedures. Actively participates in annual CV skills and competencies as required. • Demonstrates a basic understanding of radiological safety, techniques and X-ray equipment, analyzing and recording equipment and other equipment utilized in the Heart & Vascular Procedure Center.
