What are the responsibilities and job description for the Managing Editor position at Proverbs 31 Ministries?
General Purpose of Position
The Proverbs 31 Managing Editor is a highly collaborative full-time position with the primary responsibility of overseeing the daily operations of the First 5 daily teachings, study guides and writing team, as well as supporting some operations of Encouragement for Today devotions. The Managing Editor’s role at Proverbs 31 is to ensure the delivery of compelling, life changing content that helps the reader know God’s truth and apply it to her life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the master editorial schedule for the First 5 daily teachings and study guides.
- Make all writing assignments for daily teachings, working with volunteer writers.
- Lead and develop the First 5 writer team. This includes scheduling regular meetings, developing the agenda alongside Associate Editor, and scheduling writing/biblical training as necessary.
- Recruit, interview and provide onboarding for new First 5 writers, and develop strategy for offboarding writers as needed to maintain the highest level of integrity and quality in First 5 teachings.
- Manage all administrative details for First 5 study guides, including contracting with writers, scheduling and attending brainstorming meetings, coordinating and assigning content, communicating deadlines, reviewing press proof and working with design teams to bring each guide to completion.
- Coordinate annual COMPEL First 5 Writing Challenge, including assignment of reviewers, communication with challenge participants and general management of the project.
- Participate in First 5 brainstorming and theology meetings, as appropriate.
- Coordinate quarterly meetings with devotion contributor team. Work with Devotions Manager to develop the agenda.
- Develop writing training for the devotion contributor team.
- Serve as a connector between the traditionally-published First 5 and Devotion authors to help them navigate promotions and bookstore opportunities within Proverbs 31.
- Provide backup editing for First 5, devotions or other areas of the ministry; assume editing projects for other areas of P31, as time allows.
Education & Experience
- Relational heart for ministry, both with other Proverbs 31 employees and readers.
- Passion for God’s Word and theological accuracy.
- BA in a communications field (English, Journalism, Publishing, Media Studies, etc.)
- 1 to 2 years experience managing multi-stage projects, especially digital or print publications, ensuring smooth transitions throughout the process from draft to deliverable.
- Ability to organize teams to accomplish projects, keeping track of details from team members, and effectively adjusting to changes in schedule when they arise.
- Professional editing or writing experience preferred.
- Experience working with volunteers preferred (understands nuances and expectations of working with volunteers who serve the ministry in their own free time).
- Proficiency in Google Suite (esp. Google Docs) as well as Microsoft Office (esp. Microsoft Word).
- Experience with BaseCamp a plus; willing to learn Team Gantt
- Knowledge of AP Style is helpful.
