THE ROLE

This position performs as the operations director and strategic director for The Children's Hospital at Providence (TCHAP) to include Women's Services. As Director, this position is responsible for collaborating with TCHAP and Women's Services Medical Director on the overall operational, financial and business effectiveness, and is accountable for leading patient care areas, services, and programs that contribute to safe, timely, effective, efficient and equitable patient and family centered care. Working within the strategic direction of Providence Health and Services (PH&S), this position, in collaboration with TCHAP and Women's Services Medical Director, formulates strategy, implements strategic plans, develops and ensures attainment of operating goals and objectives consistent with the strategic objectives and policies established by the Providence Alaska Medical Center and TCHAP. This position is responsible for the implementation of the organizations mission, philosophy, core values, and vision, exercising independent judgment with overall accountability for clinical and operational issues for assigned area. The Director facilitates the delivery of patient care in a compassionate and ethical manner according to recognized standards and care model. This role ensures: open communication between staff and administration; positive working relationships among the healthcare team; a safe and healthy workplace; evidence-based practice; adequate compensation commensurate with responsibilities, education, and experience; adequate numbers of clinically competent staff; access to education, research, and appropriate technologies; care that satisfies the healthcare consumer; and stewardship of allocated resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Required)
  • Master's Degree in Healthcare related filed from an accredited institution (Required)
  • DNP (Preferred)
  • 5 years of Experience in health care operations with at least five years in a leadership role
  • 3 years of experience in Service line growth, development, and databases
  • Must possess the knowledge and ability to manage hospital operations through administrative ability, initiative, resourcefulness, with executive and analytical ability.
  • Must have experience in strategic planning, organizational assessment, and have highly developed leadership and interpersonal skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • RESOURCE UTILIZATION:
  • Evaluates organizational structure, reporting relationships, and incumbents to ensure high standards of operations are achieved. Accountable for factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of healthcare services.
  • Utilizes staffing management principles to assure adequate supply of all necessary staff to perform patient care. Plans for seasonal fluctuations and anticipates market changes which may impact volumes.
  • Utilizes available performance and financial tools, specialty databases and systems to monitor departments, services, programs and organizational performance in relation to the budget and quality improvement goals.
  • Develops, implements and maintains the annual operating budget to meet hospital strategic goals and support functions involving staff and physicians, as appropriate. Ties budgetary function to Strategic Planning of department. Demonstrates stewardship for financial resources actively leading and participating in cost control programs as established by the organization. Monitors financial performances and takes timely constructive and corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with TCHAP and Women’s Services Medical Director to influence organizational leaders in designing, innovating, expanding, refining, and providing services across the continuum of care. Provides oversight for facility renovations and improvements impacting TCHAP and Women’s Services.
  • LEADERSHIP:
  • Provides visionary leadership in the professional practice setting. Uses leadership principles to anticipate and influence change.
  • Determines resources and actions needed to accomplish objectives, advocating for necessary resources. Proactively identifies potential problems/opportunities and plans contingent action. Cultivates new and unique ideas to improve existing systems or operations.
  • Role models, recognizes and rewards collaborative and synergistic efforts that enable success and outstanding performance. Encourages, supports, and advances innovative efforts of others.
  • Directs, coordinate and participates in hospital committees and councils in order to promote the strategic and operational goals of the health system.
  • In collaboration with TCHAP and Women’s Services Medical Director directs, coordinates and/or participates in various hospital, city, statewide and national committees as needed in order to promote the strategic and operational goals of TCHAP and Women’s Services.
  • Effectively represents TCHAP and Women’s Services at Providence with respect to a myriad of different constituencies.
  • Participates in major fundraising programs and when appropriate, meets with potential major donors, and works with philanthropy professionals and consultants to develop strategies.
  • Demonstrate the PH&S core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence and stewardship.
  • QUALITY OF PRACTICE:
  • Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing services administration and the delivery of services.
  • Actively leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives, health and safety, and environment of care programs as established by the organization.
  • Assures optimum organizational performance by meeting goals and projections and providing timely and accurate data as requested.
  • Working collaboratively with the staff, providers, and leadership team, develops, modifies and implements patient care standards, policies, procedures and protocols. Establishes clear clinical practice expectations based on professional standards for areas of responsibility. Holds direct reports accountable for optimum outcomes.
  • Working collaboratively with the staff, providers, and leadership team, develops and implements the unit and department-based improvement plans, incorporating appropriate aspects of the PH&S quality strategic plan. Indicators are identified and improvement processes utilize PDCA structure. Assures that quality improvement targets, actions plan, and concurrent data charts are shared throughout THCAP and Women’s Services through active participation in house wide councils, dashboards and at the unit level communications.
  • Values and uses customer feedback to optimize necessary services, addressing issues and requests, and intervening in a timely manner.
  • COLLABORATION:
  • Creates systems that enable staff to jointly plan and deliver care, providing them with the skills and knowledge so they can have authority over their practice.
  • Role models and collaborates in partnership with staff, physicians all appropriate departments, patients and families to promote optimal patient care and customer service. Models and mentors PH&S Standards of Service Excellence.
  • Establishes and nurtures collaborative and supportive relationships with staff, providers, health care facilities and the statewide community. Develops relationships and networks within the Providence Health and Services (PH&S) system.
  • Collaborates with colleagues within the organization for the purpose of furthering the goals and objectives of PH&S and PAMC.
  • Collaborates and partners closely with Physician Leadership in TCHAP and Women’s Services, as well as community providers. Actively participates in physician recruiting for TCHAP and Women’s Services.
  • COMPLIANCE:
  • Maintains and guides the implementation of organization policies and procedures in compliance with Federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Assures adequate preparation for, and participate in, regulatory compliance surveys.
  • Directs and administers assigned functions to ensure high quality, cost-effective patient services which meet or surpass accreditation standards. Engages in national collaboratives to include Children's Hospital Association, and Vermont Oxford Network. Actively participates in supporting a Magnet culture with the goal of maintaining Magnet status.
  • Participates and encourages a culture of safety to include patient safety initiatives, root cause analysis, focused reviews and follows up. Prepares and submits reports on operations as required, including audits are requested.
  • EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EVALUATION:
  • Maintains leadership, managerial, organizational and technical knowledge of areas of responsibility.
  • Role models personal development and education.
  • Evaluates own practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations. Assumes responsibility for obtaining information and expanding job knowledge and competency that reflects current practice.
  • Obtains managerial specialty certification as applicable.

  • ETHICS: Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice. Follow the “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services” developed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

  • Integrates/translates research findings into practice. Stays informed of current evidence-based protocols and standards for the management of patients in the area of responsibility. Collaborates with physicians and staff to incorporate these protocols and standards into patient care.
  • Advocates for and assists in the development, implementation and modification of programs and services needed to meet patient care and staff development needs.
  • ADVOCACY: Advocates for the protections and rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nursing and other professions, and institutions and organizations, especially related to health and safety.
  • HUMAN RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP:
  • Provides a work setting that results in outstanding staff satisfaction with resulting outcomes of high retention rates and no ‘controllable’ turnover.
  • Directs and administers assigned positions and functions to ensure high quality, cost-effective patient services which meet or surpass accreditation standards.

  • Makes regular clinical and leader rounds a priority to support and enhance communication and trust, as well as PH&S initiatives.
  • This leader is well connected in PAMC and the Alaska Region. Serves as a member of the executive team for PAMC. Maintains community connections, including serving on pediatric healthcare boards and organizations.
  • Implement care/services that recognize age/diversity specific needs/issues of customers served.
  • Completes initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.
