We are looking for a Laboratory Assistant for the Microbiology Department at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location: Orange, CA

Work Schedule: On Call/ Per Diem

Shift: 8-hour, Nights

Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Division Supervisor, PD Lab Assistant performs capillary and venous specimen collections for St. Joseph hospital Inpatient and Outpatient. Staff ensures accurate and timely receipt, centrifugation and delivery of laboratory specimens to appropriate departments and reference labs (phlebotomy & processing). Staff duties may include working in other areas such as microbiology, chemistry, and hematology.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs capillary, venous specimen collections with minimal redraws, taking into account the age specific needs / requirements of patient and /or family.
  • Demonstrates ability to properly identify patients and verify accuracy of orders / tubes prior to specimen collection.
  • Ensures daily operations in processing are accomplished by ordering tests, receiving specimens, labeling all tubes / aliquots accurately, centrifuging specimens, distributing to divisions, loading on automated line, preparing samples for send out testing and processing all add on tests including evaluating specimen integrity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize and complete priorities first within established turn around times, then complete remaining work with flexibility to meet customer service needs.
  • Labels, records and verifies specimen collection data on all tubes / aliquots / paperwork / NBS’s accurately, during and after specimen collection.
  • Performs accurate data entry on orders, charges, documentation of edits, comments, combining accounts, cancellations and timely specimen receipt, arrival and distribution in lab.
  • Demonstrates timely and respectful response to phone inquiries, providing accurate information and assistance in clarifying orders.
  • Assist in stocking, cleaning, and other general maintenance activities.
  • Maintains quality assurance in specimens by responding to tube / translogic system in a timely manner along with handling and storage requirements.
  • Assists with orientation, training and competency evaluations of staff and completes own re-certifications, competencies and licensure in a timely manner.

Skills:

  • Ability to perform blood specimen collections on infants, children and adults.
  • Ability to perform basic computer keyboard data entry.
  • Ability to problem solve within scope of training.
  • Ability to interact with other healthcare staff members in a professional, courteous manner and demonstrates good communication / telephone skills.
  • Ability to follow directions regarding assigned tasks, dealing with priority tasks first, then complete remaining tasks within the established time frames.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and maintain a pace appropriate to the workload.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current California State Certificate for a Certified Phlebotomy Technician l (CPT1).
  • American Heart Association CPR card.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 1 year Experience in blood specimen collections.
  • 1 year Experience performing specimen processing, centrifuging and handling send out specimens to other laboratories, or working in a laboratory division.
