Providence is calling a RN Surgical First Assist to the Fracture Program at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR. This is a per diem (0.0 FTE), day shift position.

We are seeking a RN Surgical First Assist that will assist the surgeon in the Operating room specifically with suturing, providing visualization of operative site, patient positioning, retraction of tissue, hemostasis, and dressing placement.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
- Drapes and safely positions surgical patients, utilizing established principles of safe positioning.
- Provides clear visualization of the operative sites during operative procedures.
- Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure that should not be ligated and keeps those structures from the operative site by retraction.
- Ensures correct implants, x-rays, and instruments are in the OR room prior to surgery start. Anticipates and provides instruments and equipment appropriate to the procedure and patient age/size, utilizing available resources.
- Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon, providing irrigation and caudery as appropriate.
- Assists the surgeon in providing hemostasis using proper techniques.
- Independently closes surgical incisions using appropriate techniques.
- Independently applies wound dressings and casting materials.
- Acts as a liaison between OR staff and fracture team (surgeon and nurse practitioner). This entails carrying a spectralink phone and checking in with the NP between cases, communicates any unforeseen complications in surgery, help to determine the best sequence of surgeries, communicates any changes of procedure to NP and staff.
- Under direct supervision and direction of surgeon, may assist with securing implants and placing bone clamps.
- Understands the delicate nature of handling specimens safely. May be asked by surgeon to collect pathology and place it in the proper containers.
- Assists surgeon with obtaining proper paperwork, orders, and communication with team.
- Handles emergency situations calmly and appropriately in accordance with protocol.
- Presents a professional demeanor at all times, conveying respect for patients, families and co-workers across all disciplines.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position includes:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, required for newly hired Registered Nurses as of 2018.
- Completion of an accredited First Assist program which meets the standards established by AORN is required.
- 5 years of Operating Room experience as a Surgical Assistant or First Assistant.
- Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA-BLS) for Health Care Provider certification required at time of hire.
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
- Orthopedic experience in Operating Room
