Job Summary
The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of the Customer Operations Health and Safety Management program. This position will play a key role in providing technical oversight, administrative support, and compliance assurance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This position reports to the Health and Safety Program Manager for Customer Services.
Job Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in support of PSEG Long Island’s operations; provide guidance and counsel for all levels of management in the areas of health and safety.
- Visit various operating locations and/or project and job sites on a regular basis to ensure effective implementation and adherence to applicable safety policies and procedures.
- Review and evaluate existing work procedures to identify best management practices, establish new methodologies, and/or identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Assist with conducting job briefs, tailgate meetings, audits, hazard assessments, and/or operational self-assessments to help identify, evaluate, and control hazards.
- Manage all health and safety related incidents in partnership with Company Medical Department and participate in incident investigations to identify and address corrective actions on a timely basis.
- Ensure all safety related records are accurately maintained and are in compliance with best management practices and applicable regulatory requirements;
- Review and analyze health and safety data to identify related trends and develop recommended actions and coordinate and manage continuous improvement efforts.
- Establish accountability for safety performance in alignment with key progress indicators and scorecard metrics.
- Participate in Safety Council structure and safety committees on a regular basis and facilitate closure of any action items in a timely manner.
- Develop and deliver health and safety related communications, training, and educational programs in accordance with company standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support storm restoration, incident response, and other emergencies as part of the organization’s Safety, Health and Environmental (SH&E) team.
- Represent the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
- Promote and maintain a work environment that supports a strong health and safety culture.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required skills:
- A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in a role with direct safety-related responsibilities. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree minimum of 8 years of experience in a role with direct safety-related responsibilities
- Must possess comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and related consensus standards (ANSI, ASTM, NFPA, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong decision-making and problem solving abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and disseminate technical subject matter; experience deliver presentations and/or instructional training.
- Must have and maintain a valid U.S. Driver's License and a safe driving history
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Desired skills:
- Advanced degree in related area of specialty
- Previous experience in safety program and/compliance management, safety consulting or safety regulatory agency experience
- Familiarity with utility operations similar work environments
- Defensive driving certification
- Professional certification in safety, health, loss prevention, environmental or other related discipline (CSP, CUSP, CUSA, CIH, OSHT…)
