About being our Resident Engineer

As our Resident Engineer, you will be part of Psomas' Construction Management (CM) Group, while supporting specific assignments for the Northern California CM Team. This team specializes in managing the construction of heavy civil transportation and public works infrastructure projects in the Greater Sacramento Region, Roseville, Chico and surrounding areas. As our Resident Engineer, you will provide day-to-day project management for public works infrastructure projects. Our Resident Engineers are team players with experience in taking a partnering approach toward resolution of disputes while adhering to the project's contract requirements. Resident Engineers are also versatile and able to support construction observation/inspection needs and documentation. You will work independently with minimal direction and in conjunction with the Client Project Manager to direct and supervise field construction activities and staff, office/field engineering, inspection, materials testing, contract administration, etc. Our Resident Engineers work in the field on project sites, therefore candidates must reside locally and/or be able to make the daily commute.

This opening is for assignments with construction scheduled to start in Spring 2024. Projects may include roads, highway, bridges, structures, streetscapes, and capital improvements. Project scope, complexity, size, and durations vary. You may work on projects with a variety of elements including civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural.


Responsibility Highlights for our Resident Engineer

  • Serve as the main point of contact with clients/owners, consultants, contractors, design professionals, and regulatory agencies
  • Coordinate pre-construction activities including submittal reviews and pre-construction meetings
  • Perform Resident Engineer duties during construction including, but not limited to track potential change orders, estimate impacts monetarily and in contract time; review and approval of submittals, materials, and traffic control plans; payment tracking; manage project subconsultants; provide oversight of project inspector(s); record keeping in compliance with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Construction Standards; continuous schedule evaluation to ensure project milestones are being met and that delay claims are minimized; etc.
  • Prepare for and lead one or more weekly meetings with the project stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications to be our Resident Engineer

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Active California Professional Engineering (PE) License
  • Demonstrated experience administering Caltrans and/or local agency contracts under the Caltrans Local Assistance Procedures Manual (LAPM)
  • 4 years of relevant experience with public works for local agencies, municipalities, and utilities and/or a background that includes general civil infrastructure, public works, and/or underground construction
  • Knowledge of the construction process and the ability to read, understand, and interpret construction plans, drawings, and specifications and ability to exercise independent judgement in day-to-day interpretation of standards and specifications
  • Excellent verbal, written, and digital communication skills including fluency with Microsoft programs and construction management software
  • Ability to work on an active construction site, including walking over uneven terrain, climbing ladders, crawling, stooping and entering confined spaces, being outdoors in inclement weather, wearing proper safety equipment, and practicing industry safety protocols

Preferred Qualifications for our Resident Engineer

  • Experience working in a Caltrans construction office and/or project specific experience as a Resident Engineer for local agencies
  • Familiar with Caltrans Construction Standards, Specifications, and Construction Manual and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) procedures

    Compensation may be adjusted for well qualified candidates
