Position Summary

The Distribution Planning Engineer II-V, exercising functional ownership with moderate to minimal supervision, is responsible for the future direction, reliable performance, and satisfactory compliance of the District’s distribution system. This engineer analyzes system performance using software simulation tools, creates short-term and long-term planning solutions for the distribution system, and develops settings and placement of voltage regulation devices. Additionally, this engineer provides engineering services in a technically sound, safe timely, and cost-effective manner to enable the District to realize its goals and objectives.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Actively participate in all aspects of our safety program, including but not limited to:
    • Following all safety policies and procedures.
    • Alerting supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous working conditions.
    • Reporting any safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours to your supervisor.
    • Accepting feedback from supervisors and coworkers regarding your own safety performance.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for on the planning and engineering of the distribution system for growth, aging infrastructure, power quality, and reliability.
  • Analyze performance of the District’s distribution system.
  • Review and validate results of power flow analysis, and initiate planning projects based on analysis outcomes.
  • Provide settings for voltage regulation devices, specify size, location, and operation of reactive power sources, regulator banks, and fuses.
  • Perform flicker, power quality, and motor starting analysis.
  • Review Customer Engineering work orders and perform system impact studies.
  • Support Customer Load Growth: provides necessary technical assistance to support large industrial customer growth. This includes performing system impact and feasibility studies to determine customer infrastructure costs required for them to receive service as well as District infrastructure improvements required to support the new load.
  • Perform planned outage studies and develop associated mitigation plans to ensure the electric system can be operated safely and reliably during the outage. Provide outage coordination support, assist with facilitation and planning for complex outages, and provide information to aid Dispatch in operating the system.
  • Manage documentation of critical process documents related to distribution planning.
  • Refresh the Distribution Planning Guidelines, updating the document for changing requirements as needed.
  • Record distribution outages and track reliability indices. Develop projects to ensure the district meets strategic goals relevant to reliability.
  • Work with field crews to troubleshoot, upload, and download settings to and from distribution devices.

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.

    • 1-10 years in discipline. 

    License and Certification

    Required 

    • A valid State driver's license with no restrictions.

    • Per Grant County PUD policy all employees are required to work at their designated headquarters at least two days per week.
    • Majority of work is performed in a standard office setting.
    • Some field work that may require operations of a vehicle. 
    • Typical shift of employees in this position: ☒8 hours ☐9 hours  ☐10 hours  ☐12 hours
