What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter position at Pueblo County?
Protects life and/or property through fire prevention, firefighting, search and rescue, and dive emergency activities using a variety of firefighting emergency techniques and equipment.
The selection process includes, but is not limited to, an interview. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings. Prior to employment, candidates will complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen. The expected duration of the process will not normally exceed one month. Applicants who are not selected may reapply in the future.
- Responds to Fire, Search and Rescue (SAR), and Dive emergencies.
- Responds to fire emergencies including but not limited to, car fires, wildland fires, and structure fires.
- Operates fire apparatus to and from emergencies or when assigned to patrol during extremely high fire danger days (Red-Flag Warning days)
- Performs Red-Flag Warning patrol operations.
- Extinguishes fires and/or creates defensible areas to prevent the spread of fires.
- Performs rescue functions when needed at car accidents or fires.
- Educates and prepares citizens to prevent fire by advising, guiding and/or assisting with fire mitigation.
- Operates fire mitigation equipment such as a chain saw and/or woodchipper.
- Effectively communicates in person, by radio, and by other electronic communication methods with peers, supervisors, and the public.
- Assists with Search and Rescue (SAR) as needed.
- Assists with Dive Team response as needed.
- Uses and maintains knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS) protocols.
- Attends Volunteer team meetings and other public meetings as required.
- Performs mitigation projects.
- Operates and maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus.
- Performs duties while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as needed.
- Participates in continuous training programs deemed necessary and appropriate for the safe and effective performance of duties; maintains required certifications.
- Interfaces with the public at special events.
- Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
