NOTES FROM CALL:
Capacity planning is broken up into multiple disciplines at dtcc; mainframe, cloud, distributed, network asset planning
- At a lot of companies performance tuning and capacity planning are the same. At dtcc they are not.
- HE WILL ASK IF THEY CAN DESCRIBE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAPACITY PLANNING AND PERFORMANCE. Because a lot of people were doing both and don’t realize there is a difference. Clearly there is an overlap, looking at same systems and sub systems, the difference is in what kinds of focus.
- Capacity planning- these ppl measure system usage. Need to be able to measure system resources. MICS is a tool that lots of large companies purchase (dtcc has it) there are other similar systems so its not a must have. SAS is a requirement.
2 critical aspects;
- Understanding mainframe environment
- Someone familiar w mainframe environment as they do their work on the mainframe, systems they are measuring are mainframe systems
- Mainframe capacity planning tend to be senior engineers because it requires a well founded understanding in fundamentals of how the systems and subsystems work (CICS, DB2, MQ)
- The reporting- weekly, daily, monthly, ad hoc,
- Ability to be able to read/write SAS software
- Software listed- MICS, these are SAS software. So they need experience working with SAS. Able to read SAS that has been customized by DTCC, able to write new code to modify or replace existing code they’ve had in their environment for some time.
How mainframe works functionally. So if they learned it in an area that they worked in disaster recovery so that the able to recover it they have to understand its habitat. So the issue is not where they work, the issue is do they understand how the system/environment works. Hes interviewed senior people but it sounds like a nice story of things they used to do or things they did a long time ago, but he is looking for are they able to do those things now if they were asked to do them, “I don’t always get that impression”. “High availability planning” varies from company to company and even department to department. So having that in their background is only useful if having had that background you developed an understanding of mainframe structure components and how you measure them which is what they do.
-----
The Principal Capacity Planning Engineer for Mainframe works directly with a team responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting mainframe processing capacity at DTCC. The successful candidate will collect system resource data along with business volume data for analysis using sound data science principles. One needs to be knowledgeable of which types of data are used in Capacity Planning and well as the sources and tools used to collect, validate, then process required data. One should be familiar with Mainframe infrastructure components. A strong mathematics background in both descriptive and inferential statistics is imperative to extrapolate insight from large quantities of raw data using SAS software on the mainframe and in distributed environments. A solid foundation with Excel is a plus.
Monthly Mainframe Capacity Reports including
o Measurement of system resources usage for all LPARs
o Usage Trends, Top-N lists, Peak Profiles, Threshold Exception, etc.
Data analysis - Descriptive and Inferential Statistics
• Correlation Analysis, Business volume to System Resources
• Pattern Recognition / Detection of outliers
• Linear / Logistic Regression, ARIMA forecasts, integrating projections with forecast data
MICS support and maintenance
• Ensure the successful daily processing / reporting of 30 different MICS units split by LPAR and work type (Examples: SMF/RMF component, CICS, DB2, MQ, mainframe web logs)
• Apply MICS maintenance to support new processors, z/OS operating systems and general updates
• Ad-hoc reporting inquiries such as frequency of a specific function, transaction, or job
