The Center for Life and Learning (CLL) is a program of Fourth Presbyterian Church. The Center welcomes all those 60 years and over who seek a place to explore new interests, pursue well-being, and continue to shape their lives and communities. We offer purpose, hope, and meaning in the fullness of life’s journey. Founded in 1965, the Center provides an annual curriculum of humanities, arts and fitness classes, health and wellness support, travel and companionship.
Position Summary
Fourth Presbyterian Church is looking for a compassionate, dynamic, motivated, and professional to join their team!
The Director is responsible for planning, expanding, implementing, and overseeing the management of programs, marketing, and staff of the CLL. The Director is also responsible for ensuring the care and nurture of members and calling upon Fourth Church and community resources to meet various needs. Finally, the Director will help the CLL navigate the changing landscape of in-person and distance learning with compassion and creativity.
What you’ll do
Program Development and Implementation
- Envision and strategically plan, both near and long-term, programming which appeals to and enriches the lives of older adults - maintaining alignment with the values of the CLL
- Plan lectures and member-run programs and oversee social programming; with input from class instructors, guest lecturers and member-led group facilitators, update course syllabi for annual and special topic classes, lectures, and member-led groups
- Adapt programs to fit changing needs of older adults
- Oversee daily programming through classroom visits
- Collaborate with Fourth Church Information Technology staff on Zoom and hybrid capabilities
- Stay familiar with the wider programs of Fourth Church and Chicago Lights. Actively seek program updates and develop relationships with internal staff
Membership and Member Care
- Ensure a welcoming environment where members and guests feel valued, respected, and cared for
- Provide information for new and prospective members
- Increase member participation, including members of Fourth Church, through strategic marketing, recruitment, and retention
- Oversee scholarship membership requests
- Follow up on staff reports of member absence with calls, emails, and notes
- Coordinate efforts to meet both spiritual and practical needs of CLL participants with the church’s pastoral staff and the broader community service network
- Serve on the Fourth Church Pastoral Care Team
Communications and Marketing
- Oversee external CLL publications and promotion materials, printed and electronic
- Market the CLL through external sources
- Organize content for annual year-end program survey to be sent to members
- Maintain active network with local universities, hospitals and community groups and regularly seek new partnerships through joint programming to extend the reach of CLL programming into meaningful new horizons
Administration and Fund Development
- Provide general operational oversight, including preparing and monitoring annual budget
- Review monthly financial statement and complete monthly credit card reconciliation
- Lead and/or represent CLL at various internal and external meetings
- Strengthen the revenue base for CLL through fundraising efforts and send monthly gift acknowledgment letters, in collaboration with Fourth Church’s Director of Development
- Plan and implement Encore, the CLL’s annual fundraiser
Personnel Management
- Supervise the Program Coordinator and Program Assistant and meet bi-weekly as a team
- Oversee CLL instructor salaries, W9 and annual independent contractor agreements and professional exercise liabilities
- Work with Fourth Church staff regarding internal communications, program development, and participant management
- Conduct annual reviews of the Program Coordinator, Program Assistant, CLL annual courses and faculty. Attend all CLL classes at least once before mid-year review.
What you’ll need
- Master’s degree or equivalent work experience required, preferably in Humanities, Social Services, Gerontology or Healthcare
- Knowledge of issues, methodologies, and solutions applicable to working with older adults and exhibit strong desire to serve older adults and their families
- Creativity and collaboration in planning programming and demonstrated organizational skills
- Proven leadership, supervisory and interpersonal skills, including creating a sense of community amongst members, faculty, and staff, with compassion and warmth.
- Effective skills in marketing and fund development
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in a Windows environment and experience with Zoom; ability to learn new software, including ACS (church database software)
- Experience and comfort working in complex, multi-layered faith-based environment.

Physical Requirements
- This position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Requires ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 20 lbs.
