Poway Weapons & Gear www.pwgrange.com is seeking a Senior Firearms Instructor to join our training department. Poway Weapons & Gear (PWG) trained over 7,000 students last year in a multitude of classes ranging from introduction to firearms, personal protection in the home, CA Concealed Carry, law enforcement qualification remediation, all the way through significantly advanced carbine and shotgun tactics. A minimum 5 years of experience as a certified firearms instructor is required for this position. (Military RSO is not firearms instruction experience)
PWG is the 3rd largest indoor gun range in the country within an $8 Million, 42,000 sq. foot facility, housing a retail store over 3,500 sq. feet and 42 shooting lanes. PWG hosts and supports over 1,000 law enforcement and military professionals a year with their training and qualification efforts. PWG also serves over 150,000 people visiting our retail store and over 40,000 enthusiasts shooting on our ranges.
The firearms training team is a core part of the value PWG brings the public, law enforcement and our members. We are seeking the right person to fit into our training team. The ideal candidate will have a background with significant firearms training and teaching experience. PWG always instructs from a position of experience and success, thus we expect our senior instructors to have the real-world experience to profess from when educating our students. This position requires working weekends.
Compensation for this position is dependent on experience. The salary for this position is a base of between $40,000 to $50,000 plus bonuses based on exceeding monthly minimum training hours. Typical instructor annual take home exceeds $60K for this position.
JOB FUNCTIONS The responsibilities and essential duties performed by appointed individuals include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide firearms training and qualification for staff members and others as may be assigned.
- Provide personal instruction to the public. Students can be anywhere in age from 8 years old to over 80.
- Develop lesson plans and training sessions for various class formats.
- Operate, demonstrate, and provide instruction on primary weapons systems including shotguns, handguns and patrol rifles.
- Incorporates new and advanced training aids into existing programs as appropriate.
- Use a computer and applicable software to develop, implement and track class schedules as well as student and staff qualifications.
- Prepare and disseminate correspondence, memos and schedules regarding training, qualification, and other information as necessary.
- Remain current with new methods of range training.
- Attend courses and training seminars relating to firearms training as required.
- Lift and carry boxes of ammunition and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability and willingness to work weekends.
- Perform other projects and tasks, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: * Significant experience teaching to adult students including strong command of adult learning concepts and the application thereof * Local, State and Federal firearms laws * Various firearms, ammunition and range safety standards. * Firearms inspection and functionality checks. * Range target systems. * Computer applications and office equipment use, as they relate to area assigned. * Current principles, trends and methods of training and instruction as it relates to law enforcement standards * The principles of proper English sentence structure, spelling, grammar and punctuation. * Basic storage procedures for weapons and ammunition. * Basic first-aid practices.
Ability to: * Effectively and safely operate a variety of firearms. * Operate a personal computer and use applicable software programs. * Learn, interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws and codes. * Assess training needs and provide specialized instruction for individuals related to firearm use. * Prepare and deliver effective firearm training. * Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records. * Understand and carry out oral and written directions with limited supervision. * Communicate effectively orally and in writing. * Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. * Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Education/Experience: * Graduation from high school or passage of the high school level General Education Development (GED) * Specialized training in firearms use/safety * Minimum 5 years of experience as a certified firearms instructor. (Please do not apply if you do not have the required instructor experience) * 5 years with law enforcement and/or Military experience also a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT * Work is performed on a shooting range and in an office environment. * When in an office, work requires sitting for periods of time and using a computer keyboard and screen. * When in a shooting range environment, work requires standing for extended periods of time and exposure to a variety of firearms and other weapons, related chemicals, gun cleaning solvents, ammunition and explosive materials, ammunition smoke and hand and power tools related to weapon and range repairs. Work includes exposure to extreme noise of firearms, requiring the use of ear protection equipment. * Must possess mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed. * Physical demands include walking, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, grasping, lifting and carrying boxes of ammunition and other items weighing 50 pounds or less.
