Summary: The Grosser performs all technical duties related to the description, preparation and processing of tissue received in the laboratory for histological microscopic and gross evaluation. Work is performed under the direction of the Medical Director (reports to the Histology Manager).
Grosser Essential Functions:
- Knowledgeable in the handling of specimens from accessioning to tissue processing.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
- Complies with all Federal and State regulations pertaining to Histology including adherence to workload requirements and maintaining accurate work records (i.e. Sign-off logs, etc.).
- Performs routine dissection, inking and processing of formal-preserved specimens.
- Communicates problems and possible solutions to the Histology Assistant Manager.
- Dictates gross descriptions of all surgical specimens using proper anatomical terminology. Describes specimen type, color, appearance, consistency, number of pieces, etc.
- Dissects specimens if necessary in accordance with SOP guidelines and requirements.
- Performs specialized procedures such as inking and decalcification of specimens.
- Loads all grossed specimens into tissue processors in preparation for embedding and microtomy.
- Performs routine maintenance duties such as processor upkeep, station disinfection and storage of specimen containers.
- Communicates with Pathologists and the Medical Director in regards to special cases or uncertainties encountered.
- Complies with yearly performance evaluations to ensure proficiency and competency.
Grosser Other Responsibilities and Requirements:

Exercises all precautions described in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
- Supports the goals of QDx Pathology Services and maintains a professional manner and demeanor.
- Complies with all QDx Pathology Services policies and procedures. Grosser Educational Requirement:
- Associates Degree or higher OR equivalent
- Some lab training preferred.
