JOB SUMMARY
Our company is seeking an experienced Sales Tax Accountant to join our team. The Sales Tax Accountant position can be in Irvine, CA or can be remote within the Pacific Time Zone. This role will report directly to our Assistant Controller. This position will be responsible for managing the sales and use tax compliance process for the organization, ensuring timely and accurate filing of sales tax returns in multiple states. This individual will also be responsible for identifying and implementing process improvements, assisting with audits, and providing support for special projects as needed. They will work closely with our commercial sales team on large scale projects and should have knowledge of project-based accounting.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the sales and use tax compliance process, including preparation and filing of sales tax returns for multiple states, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Perform tax research and stay current with tax laws and regulations, including nexus determination and exemption certificate management.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in the sales tax compliance process.
- Assist with sales and use tax audits, including responding to information requests and providing documentation as needed.
- Work with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and timely reporting of sales tax data for financial reporting purposes.
- Provide support for special projects and initiatives related to sales tax compliance, including system upgrades and process changes.
- Review and approve sales quotes ensuring accuracy of sales tax reporting.
- Knowledge of project-based accounting and percentage of completion preferred.
- Assist with the month-end close process, including preparing journal entries and reconciling accounts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of sales and use tax laws and regulations
- Experience with tax research and planning
- Experience using sales tax software such as Vertex, Sovos or Avalara.
- Experience working with multiple legal entities.
- Proficiency in NetSuite or similar ERP software.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- CPA/CMA designation a plus.
EXPERIENCE
- 3-5 years of experience in accounting, with specific experience in multi-state sales tax.
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
Salary $80k-$90K DOE plus stock incentives and performance bonus.
