Position: Laborer/Operator
Location/s: Richmond, VA
Duration: Contract to Hire
Shift: $18.00 - $23.00/hr. (Depending on experience)

Basic Function:
Responsible for execution of field-based work including manual labor in the accomplishment of tasks related to rerailing operations, track maintenance, and repair, load adjust/load transfer, and/or car repair.
Also responsible for loading, unloading, and operation of equipment at job sites.
Follows directions and adheres to all safety policies/procedures.
Ensures that all activities are carried out in a safe, effective, professional, and efficient manner to protect employees and the assets of the Company.
\n- Upon arrival at job site, participates in discussions related to the days’ work plan in to ensure safety/efficiency in carrying out daily work assignment.
- Actively participates in daily safety briefing.
- Follows all safety rules/regulations; wears required PPE; performs work in accordance with established process/procedures.
- Seeks out supervisor for direction regarding daily work assignments.
- As directed loads/moves/distributes materials and/or equipment in preparation of work activities for rerailing, load adjust, load transfer, car repair and general railroad maintenance and repair.
- Upon conclusion of daily work ensures that equipment/materials are reloaded for safe transportation to home- base and actively participates in site clean-up.
- Assist in assembly, inspection, and operation of cranes and other equipment.
- Operates equipment in conformance with standard operational policies/procedures while following all safety rules/regulations.
- Assist with rigging and connection of chains, cables, and winches during derailments.
- Performs equipment operations with awareness to surroundings and co-workers to avoid dangerous situations.
- Performs manual labor including but not limited to cutting vegetation/brush, digging holes/trenches, carrying materials from vehicles/equipment to designated area.
- As directed performs work with hydraulic tools, welding, cutting with torches (if qualified), electrical tools and common hand tools.
- Operates equipment (cranes, backhoes, excavators, etc.) in accomplishment of tasks associated with specialty lifting, re railing, load transfer, track maintenance/repair, grading or other work in preparation for railroad construction and related activities.
- Participates in disassembly/loading of cranes and other equipment as necessary at the end of job assignment.
- Upon return to home base restocks vehicles/equipment with necessary parts, components, supplies in preparation of future work.
- Sorts scrap materials placing same in designated locations.
- Flexible/work-ready to perform tasks for other departments/divisions as may be required to meet business needs and customer expectations.
- Follows all required safety policies and procedures.
- Maintains vehicles/equipment and work area ensuring that they are cleared of debris/trash, tools and equipment are organized, and that the work area/vehicle/equipment present the level of quality and craftsmanship expected of ’ team members.
- Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to Shop Manager/Foreman for repair.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of trailers and equipment in accordance with Company policy.
- Perform weekly inspections on equipment.
- Perform any/all duties as assigned.
- Yes, Frequent/extended overnight travel.
- Prefer 1 year of work experience in a field-based operation involving manual labor (construction, farm equipment, utility, or related industry).
- Must possess a valid Drivers’ License.
- Capable of understanding and following directions.
- Display strong adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Must pass qualification tests as required (includes E-Rail Safe and other training/safety programs).
- Must meet 24/7 availability to respond to emergency calls for service including weekends and holidays.
- Constantly on feet
- Walking/carrying loads on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
- Working in ALL weather conditions.
- Working extended hours.
- Constant bending, twisting, stooping, standing and / or walking.
- Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads more than 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
- Must pass a criminal background check (7-year felony sex offender)
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test (10 panels for recreational drugs and opiates)
