JOB SUMMARY
This entry-level position performs a range of manual labor tasks in support of County park maintenance and development activities. Under close supervision, performs general park maintenance work, involving some responsibility, complexity, and variety, to perform general grounds maintenance and routine building maintenance at County Parks properties and facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides cordial, responsive and accurate customer service.
Performs routine turf management and landscape functions. Operates string trimmers, weed eaters, push mowers and small riding mowers. Maintains planting beds, plants and mulches/trims trees and shrubs.
Polices park grounds. Collects, removes, and disposes of litter and debris. Operates small blowers or vacuums. Shovels snow and spreads salt or other abrasives on walks.
Performs custodial maintenance in County Buildings. Replaces supplies, collects trash and moves furniture and makes minor building repairs.
Assists with clearing and pruning operations on park property.
Trains and assists in installing and constructing park equipment and structures. Digs ditches and lays irrigation lines.
Assists in performing routine maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
Cleans, paints, and sharpens mowers. Performs routine preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment and vehicles.
Trains in mixing and applying herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals used to maintain park properties.
Assists with preparation of athletic fields. Applies fertilizer, lime and seed.
Enforces park regulations, opens and closes parks and summons emergency assistance as appropriate.
Learns and applies safe maintenance practices. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Maintenance Worker I - A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) with six months of related experience preferred.
Must possess a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator"s License (or equivalent from another state) or have the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of employment to position. Additional licenses or certifications may be required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Performs manual labor and utilizes various hand tools. Typically required to stand, walk, stoop, climb or sit; reach and handle objects, tools or controls; regularly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.; and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance.
Reasonable accommodations may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions. On occasion, work is performed in potentially adverse weather conditions. The noise level is usually moderate, however the individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts. Frequently works in a precarious environment and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration and risk of infection or electrical shock. Required to work occasional weekends and /or holidays.
