What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recovery Room RN position at Queen's Health System?
Scope of Service
The Same Day Surgery/Post Anesthesia Care Unit (SDS/PACU) RN provides care for patients Pre-operatively and Post-operatively. Procedure types include: Endoscopy, ENT, Gynecology, Neurology, Orthopedic, General, Obstetrics, and Ophthalmology.
Pre-operatively – patients are fully assessed for all physical, emotional, spiritual, and family needs prior to surgery. There is a complete medication reconciliation, which will include all over the counter, herbal supplements, as well as all prescription medications. A complete physical evaluation is completed by the Anesthesia Provider, and RNs in this area will assist with any necessary preoperative sedation of anesthesia needs. The RN will also complete a physical assessment as well and complete set of vital sings, insert a peripheral IV, and medicate as per orders.
Activities vital to the care of post-anesthesia and post-operative patients include: monitoring vital signs, managing postoperative pain, monitoring the surgical site, treating symptoms of postoperative nausea and vomiting, treating post-anesthetic shivering and airway management. PACU RNs often coordinate the delivery of care for post-anesthesia patients following surgical procedures so the safety, physical, psychological and educational needs of the patients and family members are met.
PACU provides extended recovery care for up to 6 hours to patients requiring closer observation. Anesthesia can include general, regional or local anesthesia. The immediate post anesthesia period includes patients who have surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures
The SDS area is a 5 bay unit and the PACU is a 5 bay unit directly adjacent to the Main Operating Room. PACU staff are on-call Monday – Friday after the last case has completed recovery until 7am the following morning and Saturday & Sunday 7:00 am to 7:00 am (24 hr. periods at a time) and on major holidays.

Responsibilities
I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for coordinating clinical care of patient.
- Integrates all health care providers to ensure high quality patient/family outcomes, and establishes a consistent and accountable relationship with patient/family. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, initiation and development of the plan of care, patient/family education, utilization management and discharge planning.
II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Essential: lifting up to 2 lb., seeing, hearing, talking, grasping, fingering, standing, walking, stooping, forward reaching, handling.
- Frequent: pushing and pulling up to 30 psi, lifting up to 10 lbs., sitting, bending, squatting, twisting.
- Occasional: pushing and pulling up to 70 psi; lifting: horizontal lift/carry up to 75 lbs. with assistance, floor to waist up to 35 lbs., waist to shoulder up to 25 lbs., overhead level up to 15 lbs.; carrying up to 35 lbs, running, climbing, side bending, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching.
- Operates various machines/tools/work aids.
III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.
- Exposure to body fluids, blood products, and communicable diseases.
- Work environment may be highly stressful, fast paced and hectic.
IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
- Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
- Current Hawaii State license as a Registered Nurse.
- Current certification at BLS/HCP level. Additional certifications may be required based on area of assignment.
Additional Requirements
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
- Current ACLS certification required.
- Current PALS certification required.
B. EXPERIENCE:
- Two (2) years ICU RN experience or two (2) years experience managing patients on vasopressors and ventilators within the last three (3) years preferred.
C. OTHER:
- Ability to float to other units as per business/clinical need.
