The Technical Director has the daily responsibility for the supervision and implementation of the technical operations of a theatre, including lighting, sound, set design, and construction. The TD collaborates with the production team and guest designers to execute the vision of each production.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
- Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
- Supervises the implementation of technical designs and creates timelines and schedules to execute the technical aspects of each production.
- Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management.
- Collaborates closely with guest scenic and lighting designers.
- Works with Executive Director to develop and administer annual scenery and shop budgets
- Works with the Assistant Technical Director to recruit, train, and assign crew volunteers for individual shows; coordinates paid technical staff for individual shows or rentals.
- Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Attends technical week rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting the show.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Excellent research, written and oral communication skills
- Must have attention to detail and ability to work independently on projects
- Individual must be organized with ability to multitask, excellent time management skills are a must
- Bachelor’s degree in theatre arts or a related field preferred
- Experience working with volunteer casts and crews of all ages
- Working knowledge of technical theatre, including sound, lights, and set construction
This position is a full-time, exempt position. It does include irregular and extended working hours. Candidates must be able to lift, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools. Salary range $43-48K based on experience. Benefits include 100% coverage of health insurance, paid vacation, and retirement match.
