Definition:
Under the supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, operates a school bus over designated routes in the home-school-home transportation of school children. Performs vehicle safety checks and routine vehicle cleaning.

Essential Functions:
(Duties include but are not limited to the following):

  • Drive a vehicle daily over designated assigned routes in accordance with time schedules.
  • Pick up and discharge children.
  • Escort children across streets or highways, stopping traffic if necessary.
  • Monitor and control student behavior on the vehicle and at assigned stops in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Transport children, teachers, and parents on field trips.
  • Work closely with school administration and parents regarding student conduct in vehicles.
  • Inspect the vehicle before each operation according to a checklist for any mechanical defects.
  • Report critical problems to the head mechanic by phone or through the school office.
  • Clean the vehicle and wash the windows daily.
  • Make daily bus reports and other reports as needed.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Report all accidents and complete appropriate reports.
  • Install and remove chains when necessary.
  • Teach students how to evacuate the bus safely.
  • Participate in school bus evacuation drills.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:

  • Safe driving practices.
  • California Motor Vehicle Code and applicable California Education Code and Department of

Transportation Codes as they apply to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children.

  • Basic preventive maintenance requirements of automotive equipment.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • First aid and precautions to prevent exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Driving in inclement weather conditions.

Ability to: * Drive a school vehicle and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently in all kinds of weather conditions.

  • Relate effectively to students.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively in English.
  • Maintain close communication with school authorities and transportation supervision regarding routes, schedules, and pupil conduct.
  • Determine suitable alternate routes when necessary.
  • Install and remove chains when necessary.
  • Make daily vehicle inspection reports clearly and accurately.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely records.
  • Pass required physical exam in order to maintain license/certification.
  • Pass DOT required random testing.
  • Accommodate school schedule changes.

License/Certification Required:

  • Red Cross First Aid/CPR certificate or equivalent.
  • Valid Class B Operator’s License with a Passenger Transportation Endorsement.
  • Valid School Bus Operator’s Certificate.

Working Conditions:
Exposure to outdoor elements throughout the duty year. Driving under varied road conditions for prolonged periods of time. Exposure to vehicle traffic when escorting students across streets or highways. Exposure to motor vehicle fuels, lubricants, fumes and cleaning agents. Excessive noise from vehicles, traffic and passengers.

Physical Requirements:

  • Seeing to inspect and drive a vehicle, monitor traffic and passengers, and prepare reports.
  • Speaking and hearing in person and on the telephone/radio to exchange information and provide direction to passengers.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time to drive.
  • Dexterity of neck, shoulders, back, waist, arms, hands, fingers, legs and feet to operate a vehicle in the transportation of passengers; to get into and out of, and assist passengers in getting into and out of the vehicle; to inspect and clean the vehicle and to install and remove chains.
  • Bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, stretching, reaching and grasping to inspect and clean the vehicle and install and remove chains.
  • Walking to escort passengers across streets or highways.
  • Medium to heavy lifting.
  • Ability to pass D.M.V. Physical.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training, experience and education equivalent to graduation from high school and six months of experience as a bus driver or one year of experience as a heavy truck driver. Prefer one year of experience in a position with public contact. Clean driving record from DMV.
