General Statement:
The Skilled Laborer may operate dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, tractor-drawn mowers and other equipment for roadways and grounds maintenance; operate push mowers, weed whackers, light vehicles such as multifunction riding equipment, passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; operate manual hand tools including but not limited to shovels, rakes, and picks. Perform routine maintenance on small engine equipment; maintain records and prepare reports; inspect equipment; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to operate all equipment associated with maintaining and grounds keeping of the college's property and landscapes. Perform other activities to construct, maintain and/or repair roadways, roadsides, parking lots, sidewalks, snow/weather management and other projects. Position is classified as "Essential Personnel" requiring weather and emergency call in.
Supervision Received
Skilled Laborer: Incumbents of positions at this level receive direct supervision from employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work and review performance for effectiveness.

Incumbents of positions at this level may exercise functional supervision (i.e., over certain but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1 - 6 maintenance personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs various manual labor tasks requiring some specialized skills to assist in the work of grounds keeping and landscaping duties.
- Performs various manual tasks in connection with the installation of drainage, sewer and/or water pipelines or conduits such as positioning, joining and sealing pipe sections and culverts and erecting and removing shoring and bracing for trenches and excavations.
- Digs trenches and similar excavations, refills excavations, spreads and levels to grade dirt, gravel and other materials using pick and shovel.
- Sets and repairs curbing, patches broken or eroded pavement by breaking surface and mixing and applying a variety of paving materials such as mortar, concrete, cement, etc. using small hand and hand-held power tools to maintain roadways and sidewalks in a safe condition.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains signs such as regulatory, historic and information signs by performing such tasks as digging holes and installing supports using a variety of small hand and hand-held power tools.
- Plants, transplants, prunes, trims and fertilizes trees, flowers and shrubs; seeds lawns and gardens; and performs related tasks such as cutting grass, raking leaves and watering trees, shrubs and flowers as required for the upkeep and beautification of the campus grounds.
- Installs attachments such as mowers, plow blades, leaf catcher buckets and vacuum cleaner to tractors and/or trucks to equip vehicles for grass cutting, roadway cleaning, snow removal, etc.
- Services and makes routine repairs and adjustments to small engine equipment and other motorized equipment including changing and repairing tires, replacing headlights and windshield wiper blades, replacing trimmer string, chain replacement for gas powered cutters, and checking radiator water levels.
- Performs various manual tasks in connection with snow removal and ice control work including shoveling snow using shovel and/or snow blower, spreading salt and sand and scraping/breaking ice in order to provide safe roadways and sidewalks for motorists and pedestrians.
- Loads and unloads trucks; unpacks and stores supplies and equipment in stockrooms, storerooms or warehouses; and takes periodic inventories of supplies and equipment.
- Performs related duties such as sharpening tools, installing, repairing and painting guardrails; moving furniture and equipment; sweeping, collecting and removing rubbish; and opening clogged catch basins, sewer lines, etc.
- Ability to operate light/ heavy duty motor vehicles and trucks, snow and ice control equipment.
- Maintains necessary records, such as inventory records, maintenance records and records of hours worked.
- Inspects equipment and tools for wear and tear and notifies supervisor to generate work orders for repair of equipment.
- Prepares written reports of work performed.
- Perform other duties consistent with the Massachusetts Department of Personnel Administration Classification Specifications for Skilled Laborer.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of materials, equipment and methods commonly employed in grounds keeping and landscaping operations.
- Ability to operate and care for gas powered sweepers, lawn mowers, trimmers, and other tools used in landscaping operations.
- Ability to make general repairs of a simple nature.
- Physical ability to withstand strain of performing manual tasks.
- Some experience in general janitorial duties.
- Working knowledge of simple maintenance work.
- Ability to take direction from supervisor and work alone without supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and deal tactfully with others.

Applicants must have a least six months of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in building custodial or institution housekeeping work, or greens keeping, landscaping, grounds keeping, park maintenance or tree maintenance work.
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Driver's License issued by the Massachusetts RMV.
Preferred Qualifications
- Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience in a college/university environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in operating hydraulic equipment.
- 2 years snow plowing experience.
- 10 Hour OSHA safety certification.
