The Opportunity
Under the general supervision of a Senior Technical Director and the Manager, Video Commerce Operations, the Assistant Director will coordinate camera, AD, graphics, and audio effects to achieve designated production goals.
Who We Are
Assistant Directors perform duties of AD, Graphics and Audio Operator. While directing, the Assistant Director has the authority to select the camera shots and pace the live show in partnership with the Line Producer and Show Host. The Assistant Director directs the control room staff and backstage crew to execute the elements of the live production. The Assistant Director will act as a positive and contributing team member while actively working to increase technical skills, gain business knowledge, and generate ideas.
Your Impact
Operation of support equipment during the live broadcast including Reservoir image store & recall, graphics, audio and camera (manual and robotic)
Accountable for learning to direct technically challenging shows with working knowledge of video switcher operation while simultaneously operating robotic cameras.
Technically create show by coordinating picture, graphics, and sound for the live production.
Prepare for shows by referencing pals, blueprints and production guides.
Check production elements including video clips, graphic elements, blocking schemes and rundowns in preparation for live show.
Interact extensively and professionally via headsets with Line Producers, Show Hosts, and Control Room/Backstage team members to manage the technical direction of the show.
Translate Show Hosts comments relative to product presentations and other on-stage actions into matching video.
Create “mood” by developing, selecting, framing, and transitioning camera angles/shots.
Operate robotic cameras and/or cue manual operators to obtain desired shots.
Direct live broadcast team in all aspects of live production to achieve desired results.
Respond quickly to changes in direction, i.e. new product presentations, as indicated by Line Producers, Video Commerce Managers, Show Hosts, and Customer Testimonials.
Pace show in accordance with department standards and production direction.
Meet with producers, hosts and guests to prepare for shows. Attend daily production meetings.
Coordinate technical needs with Master Control and Engineering. Move cameras, practice cable maintenance as needed to support the live production. Accountable to maintain clean and safe studio space including cameras, cables, and monitors.
What You Bring
Hands-on working knowledge of broadcasting equipment including audio boards, graphics generators, image store/recall and camera robotics required, including working knowledge of video switcher operation
Knowledge of QVC live production operations
An understanding of the QXH business needs and how the Assistant Director role can further these goals
Ability to direct a live show and lead a production team while executing appropriate pacing of live production.
Ability to direct technically challenging shows by demonstrating excellent aesthetic vision.
Ability to work in a high-pressure environment.
Ability to prioritize demands and evaluate needs of the live show.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Must be able to shoulder and operate handheld camera (approx. 20-30 lbs.) and physically move/control heavy jib and studio cameras.
Ability to work various shifts.
Position requires flexible hours
Education:
An undergraduate degree in Television Production, Media, Communications or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
Experience:
A minimum of 3 to 5 years live television production experience is required. Directing/technical directing experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Excellent aesthetic vision required. Position requires flexible hours. Hands-on working knowledge of broadcasting equipment including audio boards, character generators, servers, digital video effects and camera robotics required.
