What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at R-2 Contractors Inc?
Summary:
R-2 Contractors is looking for an Estimator, key responsibilities will be to evaluate bid specifications and drawings, ensuring that we know everything required to successfully bid and win the project. Critical for success are the abilities to produce highly accurate work in a timely manner, maintain strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Communication skills, both oral and written, are a must.
Responsibilities:
- Perform all levels and types of estimating, planning, scheduling and cost engineering project activities
- Accurately perform civil/underground take offs
- Submit, track, and evaluate vendor pricing
- Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors and material vendors
- Understanding of civil construction related to the following: o Renewable energy (Utility scale solar PV/BESS) – clearing, grading, roads, trenching, foundations, etc. o Greenfield/brownfield electrical substations – grading, foundations, trenching, conduit/grounding install, etc. o Transmission/distribution – access roads, ROW clearing, trenching, conduit install, HDD, foundations, etc. o Highway illumination & traffic signals – trenching, conduit install, HDD, foundations, etc.
- May train and develop skills of other estimators
- Collaboration with internal customer groups as required to bid & execute on all projects o Estimating, project management, human resources, logistics, fleet management, & safety
- Communicate with project management
- Assess preliminary design build documents to determine scope of work required
- Prepare bidding documents for civil & underground scopes of work
- Evaluate subcontractor quotes
- Assist PM teams in handoff for project startup and coordination
- Manage scopes of work from initial bid, preliminary design, proposal documents, permitting and coordination, issuing subcontracts, provide input on site management
- Identification of gaps in project plans and implementation of recovery action plans to fill gaps
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proven ability to read and understand civil, underground, structural, etc. plans and specifications to include blueprints, proposals, and other relevant documents
- Working knowledge of aggregate, concrete, conduit, grounding, etc. materials and methods of installation
- General knowledge of material costs
- Proficient with Microsoft Word/Excel & Adobe Acrobat Pro o Experience with Microsoft Project, Bluebeam Revu, and HCSS HeavyBid preferred
- Excellent analytical, organizational, verbal, written, and communication skills
- Team player mentality
- Self-driven with the ability to stay on-task for extended periods of time while working independently
- High School diploma or GED required o Degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering preferred
- 1 years of estimating experience in civil and/or underground construction required, 3 years preferred
- Primarily office based, but willing to travel to bid walks/job sites as needed
- Ability to write contract scope of work documents
- Willingness to learn and comply with company policies and procedures
- Experience with design/build, pricing and equipment management, derivation of labor rates, management of take-off from plans and pre-defined specs
