Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field preferred. Or equivalent mix of education and experience with knowledge in the areas of domestic violence issues and empowerment-based services required. Ability to coordinate volunteers.

Supervision

The Shelter Advocate is responsible to the Program Director and the Executive Director.

General Responsibilities

The Shelter Advocate is responsible for providing direct services to victims of domestic violence; for advocacy and referral to community agencies.

Key Functions

1. Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, peer support, referrals, and assistance to shelter residents.

2. Participate in the daily operations of the shelter.

3. Communicate to clients, co-workers and the public in a professional manner. Maintain a positive attitude and work as a team to fulfill our mission to help stop the cycle of violence.

Job Duties Related to Kev Functions:

Key function 1- Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, support, transportation, and assistance to shelter residents.

1. By responding with empathy to clients in shelter as well as callers to the crisis line, and assisting the client/caller with problem solving ideas and referrals.

2. By acting as a liaison and client advocate with courts, and the legal, social, welfare, and police agencies.

3. Provide case management and support services to help fill in gaps in care

4. Through the provision of training and shelter orientation to new staff, volunteers and student interns.

5. Through the maintenance of case notes on each client to document progress and utilization of services.

6. Through the provision of basic needs such as personal hygiene items, clothing, food, and other basic need items.

Key function 2 - Participate in the daily operations of the agency shelter.

1. By completing intakes, exits, and other necessary paperwork with residents.

2. Through responding to residents and caller's needs.

3. Through preparation of rooms for new residents.

4. By putting away donations not able to be put away by night staff.

5. By ensuring general cleanliness and orderliness of the shelter.

6. Ensure the shelter atmosphere is welcoming and habitable.

Key function 3 - Communicate to clients, co-workers and the public in a professional manner. Maintain a positive attitude and work as a team to fulfill our mission to help stop the cycle of violence.

1. By attending staff meetings, trainings, in-services, professional development, and supervisory sessions as deemed appropriate by the agency.

2. By maintaining a positive and professional attitude toward co-workers, clients, volunteers and the community.

3. By working cooperatively as a team and supporting co-workers with designated projects and job duties.

4. By working toward establishing problem solving solutions to direct client services.

5. By working a flexible schedule to ensure coverage for 24 hour shelter services.

6. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Work Location: Mt. Pleasant Shelter

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Evening shift
  • Holidays
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
