R/V Lake Guardian Background

The research vessel, Lake Guardian, is outfitted and managed by Cetacean Marine Inc. R/V Lake Guardian conducts long term monitoring on all five Great Lakes for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Great Lakes

National Program Office (GLNPO). At 180 feet long and 40 feet wide, the Lake Guardian is the largest research vessel on the Great Lakes. R/V Lake Guardian employs a full-time crew of 14, berthing up to an additional 28. Four departments

(Science, Deck, Engine, Pilot House) operate 24 hours per day in individual shifts up to 12 hours. R/V Lake Guardian’s home port is located at the UWM School of Freshwater Science in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is where the ship will lay up over winter and return between surveys. Throughout its sampling season, R/V Lake Guardian will dock at various ports throughout the Great Lakes. R/V Lake Guardian fulfills research and observation priorities as outlined by GLNPO cooperative science monitoring initiative and outreach from April to October.

Job Description

A full time Marine Technician (MT) position is available starting June of 2022. You will be at the forefront of Great Lakes research, working with leading freshwater scientists and gaining experience with complex limnological and oceanographic sampling equipment. MTs are obligated to seven-day work weeks over the course of an eight-month season in addition to one month of “winter work,” in Milwaukee, WI. In port, MTs work Monday through Sunday, 0800 – 1600. At sea an independent six-hour watch is worked with 12 hours off (18-hour rotation). In visiting ports, crew members are required to work a two-hour security watch every 24 hours. While aboard the ship, housing and three meals a day are provided.

Ship amenities include laundry, exercise room, lounge, and secure parking at the Milwaukee dock.

Duties and Responsibilities

Direct and support science operations, deployment, and maintenance of all sampling equipment onboard. You will gain a deep understanding of all sampling and ships systems. Function as the liaison between the marine crew and the science party. Additional duties include lab management, survey route planning, equipment mobilization, general ships maintenance, mooring/docking, and technical support. Candidates will be trained to use winches, hydraulics, cranes, software, and other relevant ships equipment.

  • Deploy and maintain scientific sampling equipment as well as calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair (Rosette water sampler, CTDs, Traixus Underwater 3D Towfish, sampling nets, sediment dredges and corers, & underwater video surveillance)
  • Operate corresponding deployment and data management software for sampling equipment
  • Coordinate with visiting scientists and USEPA to meet sampling needs
  • Plan navigation routes and establish sampling stations in cooperation with marine crew and scientific staff
  • Knowledge of instrument software and ability to troubleshoot electronic systems
  • Basic understanding of IT; ability to troubleshoot computers and servers
  • Operate deck hydraulics; cranes, winches, a-frames
  • Provide direct support to scientific personnel
  • Assist with general ship operations, including mooring and maintenance
  • Rescue boat crew, operation, and maintenance (training provided)
  • Emergency Medical Responder (training provided)

  • B.S. in Environmental or Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field
  • Field experience and knowledge of basic limnologic/oceanographic sampling techniques and instruments
  • Possess effective communication capabilities in both verbal and written media
  • Experience operating and maintaining CTD systems and optical sensors
  • Ability to work in rugged terrain and in all conditions
  • Ability to lift to 50lbs alone and 100lbs with assistance
  • Small boat handling experience preferred but not required
  • Capacity to work and live in a ship environment, often in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work a demanding schedule with shifts varying throughout a 24-hour rotation
  • Ability to pass a background-check to obtain a TWIC card from the US Government
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and be subject to random screening
  • Ability to be examined as “fit for duty” by a licensed physician
  • US Passport is desired
