Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for positions unless they believe they meet every one of its qualifications, as described in the job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one that comes from a less traditional education background. We encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our qualifications described. The Randolph School does prioritize BIPOC candidates for permanent positions, in accordance with our mission and commitment to community. Research suggests that a school with a diverse faculty improves outcomes for all children and strengthens community-based pedagogy. All students benefit from working with teachers of color, in a diverse school community. In such a setting, they are exposed to multiple perspectives, develop a strong sense of civic engagement, and supports critical-thinking about problems and solutions-based creativity. Our interest is in exposing children to the range of what it means to be human, and the most valuable tool we can apply in this effort is the community of caring adults that surrounds them. It should reflect the world as we wish it to be, so that our children can have experiences today, at their developmental stage, that when expanded in schema, informs how they shape the world of the future when they arrive there.
Where We Live and Learn
Our leafy campus sprawls over five acres and encompasses two playgrounds, some wild woods, and a flowing creek. At Randolph, the outdoors are an integral part of the curriculum, serving as both a classroom and a teacher. Nature here is an arena for authentic and meaningful living and learning and it is a special place to teach.
APPRENTICE TEACHER
What We’re Looking For
At The Randolph School we believe that children learn best through experience. We embrace this philosophy by nurturing children to explore and discover their interests through play, the richest form of developmental learning. We are seeking a passionate educator with a strong background in progressive ideologies and an openness to learning through play in the outdoor classroom. Randolph teachers are learners alongside children, and candidates should be cognizant of their role as facilitators and researchers.
We are seeking a flexible and creative APPRENTICE TEACHER with an interest in pursuing a career in early childhood education.. The position requires an openness to feedback, an eagerness for professional growth, a passion for teaching and commitment to our school mission. Ideal candidates bring an entrepreneurial energy level and drive required to carry our mission forward.
Apprentice Teachers at Randolph will be expected to:
- Demonstrate care for children, in all its forms, as an expression of education; that helping a child wipe their nose is as important as helping them work through a complex math problem.
- Receive support from a collaborative team of colleagues and must be open to receiving and implementing feedback from a variety of sources.
- Plan and execute learning experiences that stem from the interests of children and are guided by developmental stages of children, with the support of mentor teachers.

- Exercise new strategies/activities by leading the Afterschool Program with a mixed-age group of children.
- Support children through challenges, rather than intervene on their behalf; facilitate conversation rather than lead it.

- Adapt to change and show flexibility in problem-solving.
- Communicate responsibly and effectively with parents, colleagues and the Director, in times of celebration & strife.

- Effectively manage responsibilities for both the classroom and the needs of the whole school; we’re all in this together, and we’re all responsible.
Education is Justice: Authentic Experience is Education
First and foremost, we acknowledge the privilege we have to gather peacefully as a community, to teach and learn on the land our school sits on, the same land that different communities used for living and learning before us. We acknowledge the pain that has existed for others while we work to keep joy at the forefront of childhood. We acknowledge the work of reconciliation to come and the role that we can play in strengthening our community and our world.
At the Randolph School, we approach education by celebrating the whole child. That includes the whole context in which a child is living, encompassing the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, racial, ethnic, cultural, spiritual and artistic aspects of their lives and the communities that surround them. In the spring of 2019, the faculty coalesced around our mission to declare that "_at the Randolph School, we seek to affirm anti-oppressive beliefs in children; our work is exposing children to the range of what it means to be human_” and we believe that our efforts today are a profound investment in our community’s future. While there exists a new sense of urgency around these questions, the questions are not new.
John Dewey asserted long ago that “Only through education can equality of opportunity be anything more than a phrase. Accidental inequalities of birth, wealth, and learning are always tending to restrict the opportunities of some as compared with those of others. Only free and continued education can counteract those forces which are always at work to restore, in however changed a form, feudal oligarchy.” In this sense:
- We stand firmly against the systems of oppression in our world, both visible and invisible to us.
- We learn alongside the children entrusted to our care, who have the innate ability to discover justice and to lead us to it.
- We create an environment reflective of the natural world so that children have authentic opportunities to practice noticing and solving problems, building and repairing relationships, and wondering why and how.
In exercising our mission, the Randolph School is seeking candidates that support our vision of a diverse school community. The Randolph School is an equal opportunity employer; The Randolph School does not
discriminate in admission, financial aid, administration of its educational policies and
employment practices on the basis of race, color, religious creed, disability, ancestry, national or ethnic origin, limited English proficiency, age, gender, sexual orientation, or marital status.
The Randolph School does prioritize BIPOC candidates for permanent positions, in accordance with our mission and commitment to community. Research suggests that a school with a diverse faculty improves outcomes for all children and strengthens community-based pedagogy.
To apply, submit a resume and letter of introduction. You are encouraged to apply even if you feel you do not meet all the requirements. We are interested in hiring the best candidate for our community and we hope you consider joining us.
