The ideal candidate will be responsible for executing assigned projects which involve the research, development and testing of new OTC Drug or Cosmetic products, technologies, packaging, and product improvements. In this role, he/she will work with minimal guidance from the R&D Section Manager, Supervisor, or Senior Employees to successfully incorporate the technical, regulatory, competitive, cost, operational, project timing, work prioritization and strategic considerations to support a successful product organization. He/she will have substantial product development experience and knowledge. Other R&D related or laboratory projects will also be assigned commensurate with their capability. This is a direct hire position and can start immediately.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Successfully formulate and scale up a variety of formulation types.
- Has a good understanding of the physical, chemical, biological, microbiological, engineering, and regulatory aspects for the development and technology transfer process.
- Proficient understanding of formulation laboratory equipment (e.g., mixers, hotplates, balances, pH meters, viscometers, filling equipment, lip stick molds etc.) and it impact during technology transfer.
- Deep understanding of the production equipment capabilities and its impact on the formulation for the formulation types mastered.
- Proficient understanding of raw materials and chemical compatibility used for formulation development while proficiently ing it to predict the overall final product's physical and chemical properties.
- Propose solutions when working with vendors to address raw material issues.
- Consistently maintains accurate documentation of formulation, procedures, results, data, and conclusions.
- Apply brand heart concepts and consumer product usage trends during product development and raw material selection.
- Keeps up with new industry trends.
- Good understanding of the concepts involved in assessing stability of OTC drug and consumer products.
- Proficient in the application of physical and sensory test data for formulation development.
- Able to propose investigative testing when troubleshooting formulation issues.
- Proficient in analyzing technical data or qualitative feedback.
- Can independently make recommendations based upon analysis.
- Understands the physical, chemical microbiological concepts, and regulatory requirements involved in the assessment of OTC drug and consumer products.
- Independently prepares formulation spreadsheets and accurately completes complex calculations related to formula development.
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments to understand or solve formulation issues.
- Knowledgeable in the application of statistics.
- Demonstrated ability to make recommendations using data generated from experiments.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully transfer complex information to Quality and Operations groups and successfully manage the information process.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems encountered when "scaling up" formulations.
- Good understanding of the problems that often occur during scale up due to differences in the impact of the physical forces that are experienced in the laboratory versus the manufacturing plant.
- Proficiently understands and applies OTC drug monograph and cosmetic regulations to formulation development and ingredients selection.
- Demonstrated understanding of the impact of federal, state, global and local regulations on the product life cycle and formulation development.
- Fully integrates cGMP regulations and concepts to the product development process.
- Knowledge of current US, EU, and global regulations, ICH guidance and relevant standards and quality requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to suggest raw materials and active ingredients to support product claims.
- Understands the role of the OTC drug monograph system in product development.
- Understands a variety of common clinical test protocols and when they are used during product development.
- Can develop or review protocols for claims support studies.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Suggests or performs special projects, as assigned, or agreed by the Manager or Supervisor, R&D, which enhance and contribute to the growth of the Research & Development Department.
- Performs and assumes other duties and responsibilities, as may be required by the Manager or Supervisor, R&D.
- Supports the Winner's Circle and Blistex Quality System processes.
qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 3-5 years of applicable laboratory experience preferable in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
- Master's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 1-3 years of applicable laboratory experience preferable in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
- Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 0-1 years of applicable laboratory experience preferable in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
- Consistently demonstrates good mathematical ability and analytical skills. Accurately calculates percentages, formula costs, and applies basic statistics. Applies concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Performs spreadsheet mathematical and graphical analysis.
- Proficiency with computers and in Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel
- Ability to learn new software such as ELN and Regulatory Documentation programs.
- Understands and follows appropriate lab safety practices.
- Proficient at effective communication skills for interactions with laboratory colleagues, project managers, and colleagues from numerous functional areas.
- Demonstrates the ability to efficiently prioritize project work on a daily basis.
- Demonstrates good judgement during the performance of projects and interaction with groups and vendors to manage deliverables on time.
- Demonstrates ability to work on simultaneous projects effectively and within allotted timelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT
- This position requires the individual to stand, talk or listen 66 to 100% of the time. This position requires the individual to walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, stoop, kneel, bend or crawl, reach with hands and arms overhead, and taste or smell 33 to 66% of the time. This position requires the individual to sit, climb or balance up to 33% of the time.
- This position will require the individual to lift up to 25 pounds 33 to 66% of the time.
- The vision requirements for this position includes close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision of 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to see up, down, left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (3-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
- This position has exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and toxic or caustic chemicals up to 33% of the time. This position has exposure to work near moving mechanical parts to vibration 33 to 66% of the time.
- The noise level for this position will be moderate noise (Ex: Business office with typewriters and/or computer printers, light foot traffic).
- The Personal Protective Equipment requirements that are used in this position is a hair net, beard net, safety glasses, cut resistant gloves, lab coat, and fume hood.
