Summary:

The Asphalt Raker using a rake or a rake like hand tool called a “lute” is responsible for distributing asphalt material evenly to ensure a smooth, level surface and assisting in all phases of paving operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Walk behind the paver, using the lute to straighten the joint and edge of pavement, to correct imperfections in the asphalt mat, to improve drainage, appearance and rideability of the surface.

· Monitor mat once asphalt emerges from the Screed

· Identify high and low area of newly paved areas, spread extra material into low areas and scrape off extra material from high areas to smooth surface of mat prior to roller operation.

· In areas where paver cannot be used, distribute and smooth material in preparation for compaction.

· When paver is not operating, perform housekeeping in area to ensure a clean, safe work area

· Assist in cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.

· Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task; properly follow all Company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.

· Perform projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· High School Diploma or its equivalent preferred.

· Previous paving experience is required

· Ability to understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers and the public.

· Mechanical aptitude is desirable.

· Previous experience in operating various types of heavy equipment is preferred, but not required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work and typical office equipment, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws, and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
