What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paving Superintendent position at Ranger Construction?
Summary:
The Asphalt Superintendent supervises and manages Paving Crews working on multiple private, municipal, state, and federal projects. Plans, directs, coordinates and budgets activities concerned with paving. S/he is responsible for ensuring that paving projects are completed within time and budgetary constraints. The Asphalt Superintendent will coordinate with the Paving Manager on job production goals, labor and materials, scheduling, safety and quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee current and new project activities to ensure compliance with design specifications and quality of finished product. Meet with Paving Manager to review status of projects, set production goals, update job progress, and address existing and potential issues impacting production.
- Communicate with internal and external personnel to meet scope of work and production goals, resolve quality issues and address how to overcome potential barriers in meeting project deadlines.
- Coach, counsel, and train Asphalt Supervisors in effective supervision of Paving Crews and production operations. Direct and guide Supervisors in crew member training, assist in identifying employees for additional training and promote cross training of personnel. Educate and train Asphalt Supervisors and other personnel in quality production practices.
- Review job-related documentation, change orders, production reports, punch lists, etc., and communicate as appropriate. Advise on job status, objectives, expectations, and potential issues.
- Ensure efficient assignment of Paving Crews, equipment and materials needed for each project. Proactively improve production through best practices and more efficient construction methods.
- Determine effective equipment assignment to meet job production schedules and crew assignments, coordinate deployment and delivery of equipment between job sites; review/coordinate equipment condition, maintenance and repair needs with supervisors.
- Review and provide information to Asphalt Manager regarding billing discrepancies, invoices, change order estimated timing and costs, and assist in gathering accurate information for monthly accrual activity.
- Provide consultation and advice when appropriate to internal and external personnel on technical, systems related or process-related paving issues.
- Review crew training to accomplish cross-training on equipment, effective equipment maintenance and remedial operator training as needed.
- Always communicate and promote safe working practices and Company safety standards.
- Take action to handle the results of delays, bad weather or emergencies at construction sites.
- Inspect and review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes and other regulations.
- Confer with supervisory personnel, owners, contractors, and design professionals to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction problems.
- Investigate damage, accidents, or delays at construction site to ensure that proper procedures are being followed.
- Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or its equivalent is required
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred
- 3-5 years of related experience is required
- An understanding of the road construction industry and the ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience in paving operations, equipment, and job management.
- Understanding of DOT specifications and standards.
- Excellent scheduling, problem resolution and communication skills.
- Demonstrated good judgment in recommendations and decisions in formulating and executing project strategy.
- Strong analytical skills: very detail oriented and organized.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
