Summary:
The Director of Nursing Services (DON) is responsible for overseeing the standards of nursing practices and ensures the compliance of standards throughout the nursing services and of the nursing practice for the health center. The DON is responsible for the quality of patient care and ensures that sufficient and properly qualified personnel carry out their function appropriately. The DON is knowledgeable of social, economic, legal and ethical concerns affecting the health care system and seeks all opportunities for keeping the nursing department up to date in health care practices. The DON is responsible for the implementation of an effective and ongoing program to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality and appropriateness of nursing and other direct patient related care. Provides leadership and mentoring for nursing staff.
The DON develops nursing services objectives, policies and procedures and directs the implementation of these objectives by continuously monitoring federal and state guidelines and requirements and revises departmental procedures accordingly. This position also monitors the on-going staff development programs for the nursing personnel. The position also assists with the preparation of the department annual budget and maintains the operating budget for personnel and medical equipment and makes budget recommendations as to the purchase of such equipment.
Essential Functions:
1. Provides appropriate leadership in supporting and promoting Rawlins County Health Center’s standards, mission, and values.
2. Maintains patient and system confidentiality.
3. Provides advocacy to staff, patients, families, and medical staff.
4. Assess the quality of nursing care by making nursing rounds or receiving reports from the nursing staff.
5. Demonstrates a high level of professionalism, efficiency, critical thinking, and maturity in leadership, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, personnel, and support agencies.
6. Responsible for development of the nursing budget. Maintains financial viability and supports management in the budget process. Tracks departmental budget expenditures and reports to the Chief Financial Officer of issues of over-budget expenditures and changes to an approved budget.
7. Participates on Risk Management Committee.
8. Attending required hospital and association meetings.
9. Facility representative to Medical Staff meetings.
10. Designate and announce regularly scheduled meeting times and dates for staff.
11. Evaluate, control, maintain a keep record of equipment and supplies as needed for maintaining good nursing care.
12. Responsible for planning, initiating, and educating nursing departments when establishing policies and procedures. Through constant appraisal, evaluates policies to effect improvement and increase the efficiency of the nursing care, facility objectives and mission, quality improvement goals, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
13. Responsible for knowledge of and compliance, where applicable, with regulatory credentialing agencies such as Medicare (Critical Access Hospital Conditions of Participation)
14. Establish department philosophy, objectives, and standards.
15. In collaboration with Human Resources and CCO, DON will develop policies and procedures regarding employment, promotions, termination, transfers and pay increases for the nursing department. Delegate authority and responsibilities as necessary of department employees.
16. In consultation with Human Resources and CCO, DON interviews, conducts comprehensive background checks, orients and trains, counsels, and evaluates department personnel.
17. Responsible for work schedules, daily staffing assignments, and the number of patients to assess the appropriate number and level of personnel needed to provide patient care within the staffing guidelines.
18. Assist all other members of the nursing services department staff when necessary.
19. Support, interpret and conform to the rules and regulations of pharmacy, as dictated by the State of Kansas in cooperation with the consulting pharmacist.
20. Complete mandatory education, plan, promote and oversee staff continuing educational activities.
21. Participate in defined and established meetings.
22. Follow established chain of command.
23. Participate in and develops the ongoing quality activities for the nursing department.
24. Included are the Discharge planning/Swingbed/utilization reviewer duties.
25. This list may not include all of the duties assigned.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, minimum of BSN or completing a BSN degree preferred.
Minimum Experience: Prefer a minimum of five years of experience as a Registered Nurse with a comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Prefer three years of experience with demonstrated leadership/management ability.
Certifications/Licensures:
· Registered Nurse with a current license in the State of Kansas.
· Accumulates 30 CEU’s in 2 years to keep nursing license current.
· Completes a CPR review satisfactorily every 2 years.
· Maintains certification in advanced levels of ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and BLS.

Pay: $45.00 - $52.00 per hour
