US Sports Reporter

We are looking for a Sports Reporter to join our newsroom team!

Reporting to the US Sports Editor and Deputies, you will work alongside a team of dedicated Sports reporters, writing stories for our brands with a focus on US Sports and help to grow our audience.

Reach Plc is the UK’s largest commercial news publisher. We’re home to more than 130 trusted brands, from national titles like the Mirror, Express, Daily Record and Daily Star, to local brands like MyLondon, BelfastLive and the Manchester Evening News.

Since the start of 2023, we have been building out our US operation, headquartered at 200 Liberty St, New York. We’ve launched three standalone brands in the Mirror US, Express US and the Irish Star, covering news, sport, entertainment, politics and lifestyle - all targeted at US audiences.   

We’re now entering a period of rapid growth, and are looking to add ambitious and dynamic talent to our teams.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

You will: 

• Tap into the US sports audience and drive numbers through content.
• Produce multiple stories a day while actively pursuing exclusives and original pieces of content.
• Use social media to both share and aggregate stories.
• Take on breaking news lines to get snaps live within minutes.
• Enter the newsroom armed with ideas to help support the daily news agenda.
• Buy into our tabloid DNA and the product we’re bringing to the United States.
• Work with a team of sports fans in a fast-paced environment where we celebrate achievements and encourage pro-activeness.
• Be comfortable at times working on your own and becoming a dependable figure on desk.
• Have an awareness of our rivals and who our competition is.

Shift Patterns 

This is an office based role working from our New York hub, we are therefore open to candidates based in or commutable to New York. 

Shifts are done on a rolling rota basis, and can range anywhere from 10:00am EST - 11:00pm EST. Any shifts ending after 9:00pm EST will have the flexibility to be completed remotely.

A level of flexibility is required in this role, as shifts are open to last minute changes as a result of live sporting events. Weekend shifts will also be required when needed.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate

• Expert knowledge of US sports, from national to college and even high school level and a sound knowledge of all sports, including Premier League.
• A storyteller who is hungry to reach new audiences, create growth and drive numbers.
• Ability to work at speed, producing multiple articles a day while maintaining accuracy and standards of a national publication.
• Able to work under pressure to deliver breaking news.
• Able to spot a news line and deliver it in a manner that’s on brand, as well as an ability to deliver exclusives and original content.
• Able to work all manner of shifts, weekends, evenings, national holidays etc. and flexibility to attend events/games where needed.
• A fan of data and willing to track numbers.
• A self-starter with a can-do, will-do attitude
