POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Project Director, Cal-SOAP will follow established procedures and provide students and families with academic, financial aid, and college access support. Performance of typical responsibilities and duties requires the ability to perform the job duties, and other job-related matters generally of limited to moderate complexity.

 

On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches are recruited from consortium entities, University of California, Santa Cruz, California State University, Monterey Bay, and Gavilan Community College. Student employees are also attending nearby institutions such as San José State University. On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches must all go through an interview and selection process authorized and co-coordinated by SCCC and the Fiscal Agent.

 

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will attend a Cal-SOAP orientation, in which they will be trained in Cal-SOAP policies and procedures, per the policy and procedures manual.

 

  • Orientation will be provided to each On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coach with a thorough understanding of Cal-SOAP, the programs offered, and the mission and vision of the organization. 

 

  • Schedules of On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches are coordinated by the Cal-SOAP Supervisors and are approved by the Project Director, prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters.

 

  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will receive a copy of the policy and procedures manual. 
     
     
  • Furthermore, On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will attend mandatory training workshops on a monthly basis.
     
     
  • Student contacts may occur by appointment, on a drop-in basis, and during the scheduled hours for advising and mentoring services. 
     
     
  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches document all academic, college, and career coaching appointments in the LACAI Database per the instructions given by the Cal-SOAP Data Committee.

 

  • Parents and students at all of the member schools may also schedule appointments with an On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coach or any staff member.
     
     
  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will be prepared to work with students and parents in one-on-one, small group, and large presentation settings.
     
     
  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will create and/or prepare and update curriculum prior to assigned presentations.
     
     
  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches are required to support the strategic plan, vision, and mission of SCCC. Active participation in one SCCC committee is encouraged.
     
     
  • On-Call Cal-SOAP College Success Coaches will support the financial aid initiatives coordinated by SCCC and the CA Student Aid Commission.

 

  • On-Call Cal-SOAP Level I College Success Coaches are highly encouraged to participate in campus visits, evening workshops, and all family services coordinated by the SCCC.

 

  • Non-student College Success Coaches are college students who are taking a 1-semester break, or students who have graduated but choose to continue working with Cal-SOAP while looking for full-time jobs.

 

  • Student employees who work with our K-5 population are also considered non-student staff for the purpose of reporting salaries.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Teacher/faculty recommendation
  • Financial Unmet Need (FAFSA/CAADA) - student staff only
  • Ability to relate to students of diverse backgrounds

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Enrollment in at least 6 units of college or other postsecondary school as an undergraduate or graduate student.

 

LICENSE(S):

 

  • California driver’s license and DMV report (and ability to be insured by RCS’ insurance carrier).

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

 

  • Bilingualism and Biculturalism are always preferred.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to meet and receive a criminal records clearance as required by Title XXII licensing regulations.
  • Ability to obtain TB test clearance before employment

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

The following are required in the day-to-day performance of the duties of this position: 

  • Sitting, walking, standing, grasping (simple), and visual/auditory acuity are constantly required (over 2/3 of the workday).
  • Bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, lifting, reaching, and pushing/pulling are required occasionally (under 1/3 of the workday).
  • Climbing and crawling are generally not required.
