THE ROLE

Under the direction of the Group Safety Manager, ensures compliance with safety programs for more than one operating company.  Regularly provides guidance and acts as a lead to other employees who are not subordinates.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AND ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Inspects all working areas and equipment regularly to identify opportunities for improving the safety of employees and the public.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts safety training and award/recognition programs for employees, with particular attention to those in positions of higher risk.
  • Maintains and analyzes records of safety activities, accidents, and incidents.
  • Investigates accidents and incidents and reports findings to superior and to Third Party (claims) Administrator (TPA).  Reports to police and other agencies as directed by superior and Company policy. Represents Company in hearings, dispositions, and trial as directed.
  • Recommends and presses for safety improvements in equipment and working conditions and practices.
  • Represents the Company with governmental agencies and other organizations concerted with public and employee safety.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to qualify is:

  • Six years experience in occupational safety program management.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred.
  • Technical and professional principles, practices, laws, applications and programs as they pertain to safety concerns; general occupational safety and commercial vehicle safety management principles; state and federal workers’ compensation laws and administrative procedures.
  • Current developments and trends in areas of expertise (e.g., waste company procedures and policies).
  • Computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite of applications and using data to inform and set priorities and identify challenges/opportunities.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Demonstrates ability to use computers and technology capabilities.
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency and knowledge in area(s) of expertise as well as company business and proficiency in strategic and financial processes.
  • Communicates well both verbally and in writing; listens to and understands various viewpoints; shares relevant information timely; provides constructive feedback; maintains professionalism.
  • Presents ideas effectively to individuals or groups and delivers presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience.
  • Effectively and productively engages with others and establishes trust, credibility, and confidence.
  • Promotes collaboration and assists others with their initiatives and efforts.
  • Motivates and empowers others to achieve objectives and to develop a culture where employees feel ownership in what they do.
  • Attracts, develops and retains good people; allows opportunities for self and others to reach their full potential; builds and shares knowledge and expertise.
  • Listens to and builds customer relationships; increases customer satisfaction and ensures commitments are met.
