Purpose of Role
The Production Lead will be responsible for either a specific area of the plant or the entire plant as assigned by the plant management team. The primary focus is to support the Shift Manager on delivering the manufacturing processes deliverables and communication of key issues and improvements to the Shift Manager. They are also responsible to coordinate, monitor, and supervise the operational activities of the Team ensuring individual member goals are achieved in support of assigned Team goals. Their work includes ensuring the safety, quality and efficiency of their assigned shift to include mentoring assigned associates. The Production Lead is to assist the Shift Manager in evaluating and developing associates working during their shift. Not included are the areas of Sanitation or Logistics which have separate Leads.
Principal Accountabilities
The Production Lead is responsible for a specific area or the entire production areas that include Process (Meat/Mill/Mix/Inbound), Extrusion, Quality and Packaging. This role is to provide leadership and coordination for full shift or multiple process areas, often without a production supervisor assigned. Responsible for understanding safe and efficient operation of all processing and packaging equipment. Areas included are below:
Process
- Ensure GMP’s, Site Policies, and Global Policies are adhered to at all time for either the Meat room, the Mill room the Mixing room and/or Inbound Receiving operations as assigned by the line manager
- Learn QMP’s and lead the daily shift handoffs and roadmaps and KPI board
- Provide a Quality first production environment, and ensure the highest quality of product through the process
- Ensure all process reports are completed correctly, legibly and in a timely manner
- Monitor all activities on all production lines, immediately reporting downtimes to Supervisor, Maintenance or Quality Assurance when downtime cannot be corrected by the operator
- Facilitate good communication and planning with other leads and operators to ensure that changeovers are done timely and effectively
- Facilitate supplies and resources so that each line may run without delay to complete the shift schedule
Extrusion
- Provide leadership and coordination for full shift or multiple process areas, often without a production supervisor assigned; Responsible for understanding safe, quality and efficient operation of all processing equipment and ensuring manpower resources are adequate
- Ensure all process reports are completed correctly, legibly and in a timely manner
- Collaborate with QA to ensure that issues during the shift are being addressed and that the product is meeting all target specifications; Make adjustments as necessary and involve others (Shift Manager, Operations Support Manager, etc.) as necessary
- Monitor all activities on all production lines, immediately reporting downtimes to Manager, Maintenance or Quality Assurance when downtime cannot be corrected by the operator
- Facilitate good communication and planning with other leads and operators to ensure that changeovers are done timely, safely and effectively
- Facilitate supplies and resources so that each line may run without delay to complete the shift schedule
- Maintain JDE to ensure accurate data and correct inventory during shift; Ensure all raw materials and packaging materials are moved in JDE in the correct JDE location as well as insure WIP and store locations are accurate
- Assure the process equipment and all supporting processes are in compliance with Q&FS, QMP, and performance objectives at the following process flow points. This is subject to change based on operational requirements: Conditioning, Extrusion, Drying, and Coating Q&FS Testing Equipment
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Packaging
- Assure the packaging equipment and all supporting processes are in compliance with Q&FS, QMP, and performance objectives at the following process flow points. This is subject to change based on operational requirements: Scales, Baggers, Bag Sealing, Coding, Metal Detection, Bundling, Palletizing, Stretch Wrap, Pallet Labeling, Pallets and Finished Product Transfer to the Warehouse. Ensure proper inventory movements in JDE.
- Q&FS Testing Equipment
- Demonstrated knowledge of timely order processing, maximize man hours and problem solving
Other:
- Cover for breaks and sudden absences by a member the team; Meet or exceed the plant productivity goal for the shift
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback, dealing with ambiguity, Creativity, Self-development, Conflict Management and Priority Setting are critical for this role

Key Functional Skills/Knowledge
- Working knowledge of the order process within the established metrics

- Knowledge of local, federal, and industry regulations with regards to: Food Safety (GMP, HACCP), Food Quality (Product and Process)
- Q&FS testing practices and procedures, and QMP polices and SPC
Minimum Qualifications
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent education
- Standing on a concrete floor
- Must be willing and able to work and accept varying shifts and schedules
- Wearing proper personal protective equipment (hair net, bump cap, ear plugs, safety shoes, and uniform)
- Bending, stooping, twist, turn, standing for extended time periods, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting to 55 lbs
- Must be able to adapt to temperature and environmental extremes such as hot to cold, dust dirt and chemicals
- Ability to understand and effectively communicate in the English language
- Working knowledge of Safety, Quality and Material Management Systems and procedures
- Ability to read and understand the daily production run schedule, and execute to that plan
- Ability to communicate to managers and team members any production, quality/food safety or other business critical information vital to operations and customer service
- Able to work with minimal supervision
- Successful completion of a substance screening and background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years of manufacturing experience operating a variety of machines
- 2 years of work experience within manufacturing, or a technical and/or trade discipline
- Ability to operate a forklift/OSHA certification
- Working Knowledge of food safety, GMP, GHOP, HACCP, SPC
- Demonstrated competency in computer and pc software including MS Office and email
- Knowledge of inventory control principles
- Experience with JD Edwards
