ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST/WATER QUALITY SPECIALIST

RED LAKE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

 

Open: May 3, 2024                 Closing: May 21, 2024

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: This full-time position for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians (Red Lake Band) within the Red Lake Department of Natural Resources (Red Lake DNR) will work primarily in water quality with some responsibilities working on environmental projects and lab analysis. The position will be responsible for a portion of the Water Resources Program’s field data collection associated with Red Lake Nation water quality assessments including both water quality and hydrology data. Additionally, the position will manage and assist with other US EPA funded programs including Nonpoint Source Pollution (319) projects on and off the Reservation and UST (Underground Storage Tanks) inspection at Red Lake and partner reservations. Duties will include coordinating field activities, conducting field water quality and biological sampling, conducting stream flow surveys, assisting in the development of nonpoint source projects, water quality planning activities, tank inspections, and other duties as assigned. This is a two year position that may be extended if appropriate funding is secured. Anticipated start date: June 10, 2024. Reports to Water Resources Program Director. Full-time position with benefits. Salary; $49,000-$52,000 DOQ.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 1 year of experience in aquatic biology, natural resources management, or related discipline with a water resources emphasis. Formal course work should include limnology and related courses and chemistry
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with professionals and the general public.
  • Be physically fit and able to work outdoors, have a valid driver’s license and be insurable; be punctual, responsible, and able to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Possess basic computer skills: spreadsheet, word processing, email, and internet browsers.
  • Have laboratory experience including basic water analysis, meter calibration, and standard lab safety protocols.
  • Must be available to travel for UST inspections, conference and meeting attendance, and training.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Familiarity with operating and maintaining boats, gauging and electrofishing equipment, ATVs, snowmobiles, and a variety of field and lab meters. 
  • Fish, invertebrate, and plant taxonomy experience.
  • Basic GIS skills.
  • Familiarity with tribal natural resource and EPA programs.
  • Statistical analysis experience in R or other statistics software
  • American Indian preference is granted to qualified individuals
